I'd like to introduce myself to the list. I was born in Bridgend in
1959. My grandparents, Nancy and Randall Owen, lived in Nantymoel, at
2 Ogwy street . They had a clothes shop that in the early days also
sold wool, buttons, that kind of thing. As a child I spent all of my
summers there. After my grandmother's death in 1987 my mother sold
the house and shop to a couple who had an antique business, I think.
I would love to know if they are still there and what has happened to
the house (I was very fond of it)
Next door to my grandparents was Mrs Swain. Her son George moved in
after his retirement, in the mid 1970s I think. He was a
schoolteacher and avid gardener. Next door to Mrs Swain was Dicko's
sweet shop.
To the other side of my grandparent's house was the farm. Is it still there?
Across the road was a big hall, when I was very young, it was a
cinema. Also part of it was a library that I remember fondly. Down
the hill, I think, was a school (park school?)
Other shops I remember are Henry's grocery store, a pub, Sonia's
fruit and vegetables, a post office and a chemist.
Families I remember are the Pughs (are they still there?)and the
Dinhams who lived next door. Also Dr. Jones who was a family friend
and my Aunt Dolly and Uncle Gwyllym (did I spell that correctly?) who
lived in Ogmore, River street I think, the very last house on the
left. They had one son, Norton, married to Sandra, who might still
live there. My grandfather's family was from Ogmore--there is my aunt
Eunice whose son is a research chemist, and my aunt Rosie who had a
sweet shop and also did perms!
If any of this rings a bell for anyone, I would love to hear from you.
Regards,
Pascale Mackey (nee Gaitet--my mother, Pat, married a Frenchman,
hence my french name)
