Dear Huw,
Well done; I have not com across Miss Maria Thomas in the Glynogwr area.
I will see if I can find her on the Census and try to get fixes on her two
[may be more]levels.
Thanks again.
Best wishes,
Bert

Subject: [WLS-OGMORE-VALLEY] Woman ahead of her time?
Hi All,
Whilst extracting some information for my electric light article
I came across this snippet from the Central Glamorgan Gazette of
16 September 1892...
The only female Mine Owner I have heard mention in this area, if not the
whole country?
"GOOD NEWS FOR BLACKMILL
Miss Maria Thomas, of Pwllyfelyn Cottage, Llandyfodwg, has struck a spnedid
vein of coal over feet thick, in the Pantyfud Valley, about half-a-mile
above Blackmill. It is supposed to be the Red Ash vein, and the one that the
Yorkshire Company are now sinking to. This place is a mile from Miss Thomas`
first level which she opened some years ago. This seam is on the rise under
the whole of Glynogwr Mountain".
