Subject: [OV] PAYNE Sidney, butcher/fruiterer, High Street, Ogmore Vale
Sidney William PAYNE was the son of Sydney PAYNE and Charlotte Ann
PAYNE
(nee BAKER). He was born on 21st. January 1880 in Rothwell,
Northamptonshire. He was the elder brother of my grandfather, John James
Valentine PAYNE, born 14th. February 1893 at Llangeinor.
At the time of the 1881 census, Sidney was living at Well Lane, Rothwell
with his parents and elder sister, Ann Elizabeth (Nan).
By 1891, the family had moved to 1 Oxford Street, Pontycymmer, Llangeinor,
Glamorgan, Wales, where his father ran a fruit, vegetable and fish shop.
The 1901 census shows that Sidney W. PAYNE was living 58 Corporation Road,
Grangetown, Cardiff, Glamorgan in the household of George A. MOSES, a
butcher assistant. .
Sidney married Ann DAVIES, a jeweller's daughter, and they lived in Ogmore
Vale, where Sidney ran another fruit, vegetable and fish business.
In the 1910 Kelly's Directory for South Wales, Sidney PAYNE was listed as
a
butcher at 13 High Street, Ogmore Vale.
In the 1923 Kelly's Directory for South Wales, Sidney PAYNE was listed as
fruiterer at 15 High Street, Ogmore Vale.
He had a large family. One of his daughters was Evelyn who married a man
called Jethro. Her married name might have been WILLIAMS. Another daughter
was Cassie who was blind. It's thought that she attended the Blind School
in Bridgend. Edna was the name of another daughter. Sons included Edward,
Illtyd and Selwyn.
I've been told that Sidney died between 1926 and 1928, after an accident
with a child's swing as he was coming home late at night in the dark.
Does anyone have any further information about Sidney PAYNE or his family,
please?
Josephine
