Dear Lynne,
Delighted to hear from you and I have CC`d my reply to the
Ogmore Valley Mailing List as I`m sure that our small but growing band (now
20) will be very interested in your story below............
I know Bert will glean the info about both Jacob Jones.
I am sure you will enjoy Bert`s article on the "Schoolmasters at War" in
Journal 2001 when you recieve them, (I have recieved your order today so
will post them Monday).
I can if you wish add you e-mail address to the Mailing List so that you can
share any news we have or indeed you can contribute anything you want to on
the Ogmore Valley.............
We would of course be very interested in your family, we already have
something in common as my THURLOW ancestors first entered Wales at Pembroke
Dock, though mine is a Military Connection, ny Grt Grt Grandfather being in
the Garrison Artillery at Pembroke Dock.
We would be interested in the 1910 account of the Valley as I don`t believe
we have a copy, though I do stand to be corrected on that!?
Regards
Huw

Subject: getting in touch!
Dear Sir,
I was delighted to discover your society while browsing the net and
looking for the link to the census of 1901-- failed to find that but
discovered you instead. I wonder if I know you as I grew up in Ogmore.
I lived at 12, Meadow st, the daughter of Cyril Matthews who taught at
Garw grammer school , born and went to school in Ogmore under Jacob
Jones . His father William lived in Caedu , worked in the Wyndam mine
all his life and was part of the WW11 group that went to France with Dr
Anderson. He was born in Ogmore , his father originally came from
Somerset and was killed in the Wyndam aged 39. My mother was Margaret
Harrison, daughter of Bradfield Harrison who was the saddler ( a
foreman) for the pit ponies--- he originally came from Pembroke Dock.
They lived at 89 High St (opposite the now defunct co-op) and at some
time ran a restaurant there. This may help to place our family.
I see that you are writing about some of the valley families --perhaps
you would be interested in including mine. Let me know if I can be of
any help-- I still visit ocasionally as I still have family there
I am so pleased that someone is at last recording our past-- I have had
great trouble finding anything out about the valley but I do have a copy
of an account of the valley written as an eisteddfodd entry about 1910 .
Perhaps you know of this account -- I obtained it through the library
service some years ago.I can let you have a copy if cannot get hold of
it.
Good luck with your society, Lynne Matthews Miller
