Hi David,
Look foraward to hearing from you.............Before I answer
your e-mail specifically, do you have any objections if I sub you to the
Ogmore Valley Mailing List (wlS-OGMORE-VALLEY-L(a)rootsweb.com ) ? It`s the
way I keep in touch with all the members of the society (and some that are
not yet members), doesn`t cost you anything and is a very low traffic
list.............usually only me posts to it:-)
With regards to the RAFA and you being an ex-member of the RAF, that can
only help, I and several other Society members are ex-forces, but mainly
Army/Navy so any "RAF terms" we come across we would be glad of
assistance..........
There is no longer a RAFA club in the Valley but at one point there were
three ex-service clubs, the RAFA Club in Nantymoel, now the Nantymoel Rugby
Club, the Ex-Servicemans Club in Ogmore (known locally as the Belt & Braces)
and the WEXA Club which is now the Ogmore Vale Rugby Club...........Quite
when two demised and subsequently became the respective rugby clubs I don`t
know but the Belt closed it`s doors about 2-3 yaers ago due to very poor
management...........
I do know that in it`s defence the RAFA Club at nantymoel tried for many
years to try and find out the names of the Aircrew from either aircraft to
try and raise a memorial even if it was only in the Club, but the MOD being
the *nice* people that they are they met with constant brick walls all the
way...........
We are of course more fortunate these days what with the CWGC Site, though
the MOD still won`t release the men`s service records except to next of
kin............
The RAF Museum at Hendon have been very good, they have sent both A.M. Form
1180`s for both aircraft and are very willing to answer any questions we may
have............
With regard to RAF St Athan, we are keeping them as our "ace up the sleeve"
as I have no doubt they will want to be involved and we will be very glad to
have their involvement, we are trying the local newspapers from the aircrews
home areas first though (we have an article being printed this week in the
"Petersfield Post", a local Hampshire paper from where the Hurricane Pilot
lived) and we are expecting a reply soon from British Airways as to whether
we can have the engine remains cleaned at their facilities................
One question that immediately springs to mind is once we have the engine
cleaned, what do use to preserve it before before *mounting* it in the
monument? Any ideas, as "normal paint" seems innapropriate?!
I know of the RAFA club in Porthcawl, are there any others in the area who
may be interested?
I will keep in touch

Hullo Huw,
Many thanks for your prompt reply.
My wife is also from the Ogmore Valley, in fact raised in
Corbett Street, attended Ogmore Grammar etc and hence I will be writing to
you for family membership.
With regard to the RAF memorial. I am a member of the
Porthcawl RAFA and did serve myself National Service in the RAF 1956 to
1958
Service Number 5028710. To that end I would be very happy to be
involved
in
any way you think appropriate. I would have thought the local RAFA
and in
fact RAF St Athan would wish to be involved in the ceremony and may also
assist with funding.
Unfortunately I cannot make the 16th for your next meeting
as I am already committed.
Please keep in touch. I have circulated details of the
Society to Australia, North Wales London and Warwickshire where I have
relatives all of whom at some time in their lives lived in Nantymoel.
Cheers
David
