Hi Eileen and Ken,
It is interesting to see that you live in Liverpool as I have found this
entry on the 1881 Census. It is obviously just a long shot but Oswestry in
Shropshire is not far from Llanwddyn, you will notice that Mary Benley is
from Maller in Shropshire so she could possibly be a relative of Ann and
that is the reason why she is working there. I don't know if you have a
Birth Certificate for Ann but if not, it will be worth applying to the
Superintendend Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths in Oswestry for a
certificate. The cost is £7 plus a stamped addressed envelope. You can
state in your letter that you only want it if she is the daughter of William
Dawson. I have the address for Oswestry if you want it. You don't mention
a name for Ann's mother and a Birth Certificate will give you that.
I did an "Advanced Search" on the 1881 Census for Shanty but nothing showed
up. It is likely to be the name of a dwelling rather than an area.

I also found this entry which is likely to be George and again you have
enough information for a Birth Certificate from the Register Office. I
think it is likely to be the Welshpool and Llanfyllin one but if not it will
be Newtown.

I think it is going to be difficult to find William Dawson on the 1881
Census as you don't know his age. I couldn't find a suitable one in
Shropshire or Wales.
I have just looked again on the Lancashire one, the first time I considered
there were too many with the name William Dawson to go through but have had
an attempt and found this which does tie in with Ann working in Everton and
his occupation.

I hope the above helps, I know the entries for Ann and William are just long
shots but it could just be the correct entries especially as they were not
in Wales in 1881. Good luck with your research.

Subject: [WLS-MGY] Parish of Llanwddyn
Dear readers
Today I received a copy of the following marriage certificate:
13 August 1883 George Edward Bagley - 37 - Bachelor - Civil Engineer of
Gwreiddiau
in this Parish s/o Abraham Bagley - School Master
to
Anne Jane Dawson - 24 - Spinster of Shanty in this Parish d/o William
Dawson -
Hotel Keeper
Married in the Parish Church of Llanwddyn by Banns
As usual with each new piece of information that we receive it raises
further
questions and lines of enquiry so I am hoping that perhaps some of
you knowledgable listers can help me.
I was able to locate Gwreiddiau on the map but have been unable to find
Shanty -
this must only be a small place and hopefully there would not be
more than one hotel thus helping me find William Dawson and his family - at
the moment I cannot find either him or Anne Jane on the 1881 census or on
the IGI.
I then located some LDS films for this parish only to discover that the
years that
I would be looking for (c 1859) are not covered so perhaps
someone may know if there are any records to be found elsewhere.
My final question - being only used to Roman Catholic and Church of
England parish
records, when this certificate states 'Married
............... according to the Rights and Ceremonies by the Established
Church' would this mean the Church of England or Church of Wales (presumably
these latter two are one and the same religion except the country is noted -
if you follow my meaning).
Sorry to inundate you with all my queries but I trust you will forgive my
ignorance
of all things Welsh but I truly am slowly learning.
regards
Eileen and Ken - Liverpool
