Yvonne,
I have the 1851 Census for Montgomeryshire (CD pub. by Powys FHS) and have
found the entry I believe you're referring to. Edward HUGHES, age 26,
Lodger, Stone Mason, but his birthplace, as you can see, is Darowen, and
he's living in Pennal, which is in Merionethshire but enumerated in the
Machynlleth Enum. District in the 1851 Census.
It's not impossible that the elderly Edward HUGHES, 77, shown here, was his
father. (He was the father of the widowed Elizabeth JONES and, if the
younger Edward was her brother, it really should've indicated that.)
You didn't mention when Jane EVANS was born -- I can look for her in the
same area, if you'd like.

Julie
They (Edward Hughes and Jane Hughes/Evans) were in the 1861 census with
only one son Edward aged one born in Machynlleth. I have found the father
in the 1851 census index as a single male and will order the film to see
who he is living with, but the index states that he is a lodger and a
stone
mason. Tomorrow I will go through the index again and try to find
any
Hughes in Machynlleth with the same ref no's. He (the father was born in
Abercegyr, and his wife Jane was born in Abergavenny as stated in the 1861
census. I have not been able to find her in the 51 census prior to her
marriage as yet.
I guess I want to be sure of my facts before I order any certificates from
the District Registar.
Yvonne
