Dear Don,
Thank you for sending further information about your Morgan ancestors.
Please make sure that you send any future postings to the Montgomeryshire
List (at WLS-MONTGOMERYSHIRE-L(a)rootsweb.com), so that *all* list members
have the chance to help you. It's possible that someone on the List may have
encountered a member of your family line while they were researching their
own.
Unfortunately, your message to me was made more difficult to interpret by
the insertion of extra blank lines in the text. I have removed these and
tidied up the message in the version copied below.
From the information you've provided, I've extracted the
following salient
points:
1. Thomas MORGAN, b. 12 Jan 1826, Montgomeryshire [source: obituary dated
1912].
2. Thomas was son of Daniel MORGAN (age unknown) and Mary WILLIAMS, b. ca.
1808, Wales [source: 1850 US census]. Daniel was your great great
grandfather.
3. Thomas was brother of Ann MORGAN, b. 17 Feb 1828, Wales, daughter of
Daniel MORGAN and Mary WATKINS [source: death certificate].
4. Thomas and Ann and their parents emigrated to USA circa 1830 [source
unspecified].
Comments
(a) It would have been helpful to have provided full details of the entry
from the 1850 US census. Does it show a family group including the mother
(Mary) and both Welsh-born children? If so, do the ages match the data from
the death certificates? If only Mary is shown, how do you know the Mary
Morgan in the census is *your* ancestor?
(b) Information such as birthdates and mothers' maiden names given on the
death certificates or obituaries of adults is always suspect, because it
relates to events which took place many years earlier. Its accuracy depends
on the informant.
(c) Thomas and Ann appear to have different mothers (Mary WILLIAMS and Mary
WATKINS). This could, as you suggest, be due to a second marriage. But it
could be that Thomas and Ann are from two quite different families both of
whom happen to have a father with the name Daniel MORGAN.
Alternatively, it could be that the information about the mother's maiden
name quoted on one of the children's death certificates is wrong.
(d) The International Genealogical Index (IGI) at
http://www.familysearch.org/ shows a marriage on 10 Jun 1822 at Trefeglwys,
Montgomeryshire, between a Daniel MORGAN (b. ca. 1797, Trefeglwys) and a
Mary WILLIAMS (b. ca. 1801, Trefeglwys). There are, of course, a
considerable number of Montgomeryshire marriages (and baptisms) which are
*not* included in the IGI.
Nevertheless it might be worth your while examining the Bishops Transcripts
of this entry in the Trefeglwys parish register (the BT can be ordered on
microfilm at your nearest LDS Family History Centre) and searching for
baptisms of possible children of this marriage to see whether they include
an Ann and Thomas. Unfortunately, the original Trefeglwys parish records,
now held at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, do not seem to cover
the period after 1812 [source: "Phillimore Atlas and Index of Parish
Records"].
(e) I don't yet understand from the information you've supplied how you can
be sure that your details of Daniel, Mary, Thomas, and Ann, all relate to
the same family group. Are you perhaps using the results of research
conducted by someone else in your family?
(f) Have you explored the possibility of finding records (in the US) of the
family's arrival as immigrants into the USA?
Don, if you can address the points I've raised above, your responses might
ring a few bells with others on the Montgomeryshire List.
But please remember to direct your reply *to the List* rather than only to
me.
Kind regards,
John

Subject: Morgan of Montgomeryshire, wls
Dear John,
Thank you for the response to my Query, I'll try to make this so one can
understand.
Daniel Morgan is my Great great Grandfather he was married to Mary Williams
1850 cenus states her age as 42 and born in wales, Daniel was also born in
wales, but Died before 1850, so don't have his age, as we are unable to find
so far his final resting place.
Thomas was born 12 Jan 1826 in Montgomeryshire, found in a story of his life
at his death 11 Oct 1912 in Utica, NY. also have seen his grave site. I also
have a death certificate that states he was born in wales, but mothers name,
not known.
Ann his sister was born in Wales born 17 Feb 1828, Her death certificate,
states she was born in Wales and her mothers maiden name was Mary Watkins.
This cause a couple of problems either Daniel was married twice 1 Mary
Watkins 2 Mary Williams
The only mention of Montgomeryshire is Thomas he is my Great Great Uncle.
This is all the information I have I hope that this helps. Again thank you
for the reply.
