Hi Listers. I am researching SMITH in Newtown. In 1851, CATHERINE SMITH (42, b.
Machynlleth) wife of DAVID SMITH (46. b. Dundee) ran a day and boarding school in High
Street, Newtown. They had (at least) three daughters - Catherine Mary, Emily Jane and
Grace - and a son David, my g-grandfather. By 1881 Grace is no longer listed as residing
in High Street and has possibly married. Catherine Mary and Emily Jane are unmarried and
are still residing at the High Street premises with their father, now aged 70, whose
occupation is given as Superintendent Registrar and Accountant (Municipal Offices).
There is no mention of Catherine, though David is stated to be married rather than
widowed. The school has ceased to function and the premises provide lodgings for lawyers
clerks and the like. Has anyone information about the SMITH's, the school or the
premises in High Street? I would welcome any information. Thanks. John
