Hello Everyone,
I am following up some rather conflicting information on a PRICE family living in CARNO in
the 1820's.
Father RICHARD PRICE Agricultural Labourer
Daughter MARY PRICE born 1826/7 according to the 1881 census, but in 1829/30 according to
the marriage cert. The only possibility in the IGI is a birth year of 1823.
In the 1841 census there is a Mary Price aged 12 at Herbachan Mill but no Richard at the
same address. There is also a Mary Price aged 17 with Richard Price head of household at
Lower House Upper Hopton, (Chu?). She is listed as a Farm Servant, but I believe that
ennumerators used this in cases where adult children were working on the family farm. I
would be grateful if anyone could tell me whether either Herbachan Mill or Upper Hopton
are anywhere near Carno. Also if the above family is of interest to anyone else I would
like to exchange information.
Mary Price married Owen Parry at Llanbrynmair in 1857 and subsequently lived in
Machynlleth.
Regards,
John
John,
The IGI is far from complete so if you have consistent information (from more than one
census entry) indicating she was born in the parish of Carno, you need to look for her
baptism in the original parish register (National Library of Wales), a transcript (Powys
County Archives) or the LDS microfilm of the Bishop's Transcripts for the parish.
If you were looking at the 1841 Census and found those two places, you should know where
they were located (parish/village), shouldn't you? (They aren't listed in Carno
in 1851.)
The following entry *may* be your Mary PRICE in Llanbrynmair in 1851 working as a servant.
The entry below *may* be her parents. The birthplace of this Mary PRICE is listed as
Llanbrynmair but so is everyone else in the household --- not uncommon for it to be wrong
if whomever answered the enumerator always assumed she was from there originally. She was
the *only* Mary PRICE in the parish of Llanbrynmair in 1851.
1851 Census, Parish of Llanbrynmair:
JONES Richard h m 66 Manufacturer MGY
Llanbrynmair 1 Winllan /f499/p6
JONES Mary w m 69 Manufacturer's wife MGY
Llanbrynmair 1 Winllan /f499/p6
PRICE Mary sv u 24 Spinner
MGY Llanbrynmair 1 Winllan /f499/p6
PUGH Mary sv u 23 Weaver
MGY Llanbrynmair 1 Winllan /f499/p6
also in Llanbrynmair in 1851:
PRICE Richard h m 49 Ag. lab.
MGY Trefeglwys Trefolwen /f489/p6
PRICE Margaret w m 37
MGY Llanbrynmair Trefolwen /f489/p6
I wish I could've been of more help.
Regards,
Julie Preston
