Pat,
It would appear the 1851 entry in Kerry Road, Newtown, is the right family.
(I agree that SAL is an error in John's birthplace.) Instead of ordering
Harriet's birth certificate from London, suggest you order it directly from
the Supt. Registrar at Newtown -- they do not use the GRO Index numbers so
you'll have to provide the information you have from the 1851 census entry.
You may also wish to ask them if they have a marriage entry for John DAVIES
to a Harriet in Newtown, ca. 1837/8 (based on eldest child's age). If you
strike out there, they may have been married at Worthen, Salop (Shropshire)
as it was customary to marry in the bride's home parish. The marriage will
provide you with their fathers' names and occupations.
I may be able to add a bit (below), but suggest you also order the LDS Film
#0104590, Bishop's Transcripts, Parish of Trefeglwys, MGY, so that you can
be certain to pull out all baptisms of John DAVIES ca. 1815/16 in case I
missed any as my notes are by no means complete. Maurice is, by the way,
very popular in the DAVIES families of Trefeglwys and Llandinam parishes.
In my own study of DAVIES in the parish of Trefeglwys over the years, my
notes show several baptisms for John DAVIES in the years 1814 to 1816:
Sept. 27, 1814, John, son of Edward Davies & Mary his wife, Minfordd, Weaver
March 27, 1815, John, son of David Davies & Margaret his wife, Vairdref*,
Farmer
June 29, 1815, John, Base Child, John MASON** & Ann DAVIES, Miner
No baptisms for John DAVIES in 1816 and my notes say the 1817 pages are
missing.
* Trefeglwys Parish Church MI's (pub. by Powys FHS) shows:
#30 Slate headstone
Sacred / to the memory of Elizabeth, / Daughter of John & Sarah DAVIES / of
Fairdrefach in this Parish, who / died April 10th, 1858 Aged 10 Weeks. /
also of the said / John DAVIES, / who died October 11th, 1867, / Aged 51
Years. / Also of Thomas, Son of / the said John & Sarah DAVIES / who died
Octbr. 29th, 1869, / Aged 10 Years.
[It would appear the John baptised March 27, 1815, married a Sarah, so this
is probably not the father of your Harriet]
**Note: There were 'pockets' of MASON's just over the hill in
Cardiganshire -- parishes of Ysbyty Cynfyn, Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, Eglwys
Newydd, etc. Miners from that area would come over and work the lead mines
at Dylife.
The DAVIES families were not at Minfordd or F/Vairdref (fach or fawr) in
1851, nor can I match them up with anyone in the parish that year.
Hope this helps,
Julie Preston

Subject: Harriet Davies
Hi all,
I have just joined the list hoping to find my great great grandmother and
her family. She was HARRIET DAVIES and her father was JOHN DAVIES. She
emigrated to South Australia in 1864 and said she was from Montgomeryshire
and aged 21.
She married for the first time in 1871 in Adelaide and said she was 25,
she
married again in 1880 and said she was 31 (her husband was 29), she
married
again in 1883 and said she was 30 (her husband was 28) she died in
1922 in
Adelaide and her age was given as 70.
Sth Aust does not put mother's names on marr certs or death certs, so I do
not know her mother's name. I have bought two Birth Certs but on going to
Wales I found that neither was the right one as they both stayed in Wales.
My only hope now is to find out if someone has the 1851 census and they
would kindly look to see if there is a John Davies Head of household with
a
daughter Harriet b between 1843 (aged 8) and 1851 newborn. My guess
is her
age at first marr was the correct one which would make her about 4 or 5 in
1851.
She named her first two children Josephine Loveday and Joseph Maurice by
her
first husband. Her first husband was Joseph Jolly, a Cornishman and
his
mother's name was Loveday. Where the Maurice came from I do not know as
Joseph's father was John the same as Harriet's father.
I would love to know more about my Harriet if some one can help.
Pat Milne
