Hi all,
Many, many thanks to Brian, Keith, Julie and Margaret for their rapid
response to my query about great great grandmother Harriet Davies. I am
bowled over with everyone's help! Brian's census record looks very, very
promising especially the brother Maurice. As a weaver's daughter it is
unlikely she would have received an education, I should think, as my Harriet
remained unable to even sign her name right through until she made her mark
on her will. On the sailing document to Australia she was described as a
servant of good behaviour.
I will certainly see about getting a birth cert as Julie has suggested from
Newtown. I wonder if the family were on the 1861 and 1871 census or even the
1881 census?
Before knowing much about research I visited Wales twice to look for Harriet
using two birth certs previously bought. sadly I found both of them never
left Wales. One died as a teenager and was buried next to her parents and
the other from Hope Callow, parish of Worthen was buried in the family grave
and never married as I tracked down her death cert.
I looked for a Marriage between John Davies and Harriet on the IGI which is
by no means all those that are in actual records. None for Montgomery and
one in 1835 for Condover in Shropshire. She was also a Davies. I found a
Harriet Davies bp in 1807 in Condover but that does not match the age of the
Harriet on the 1851 census who was b c 1819.
I will keep my fingers crossed for third time lucky with the birth cert
Thanks again Brian, Keith, Julie and Margaret
Pat Milne
