Hi Keith,
I should have guessed you were one of these men who thinks a woman's place
is in the kitchen. My husband realises we have a cooker but doesn't know
what to do with it!!
Have you a tried Staffordshire Oats Cakes? They are like an oat pancake
rather than the Scottish hard biscuit. They are a traditional breakfast
treat in this area along with the other items you mention. In the city of
Stoke-on-Trent they are little shops that just make and sell oatcakes. On
the "pot bonks" the mid morning break is usually oatcakes with cheese.
"Pot
bonks" are the china manufacturers such as Wedgwood, Doulton, Spode, Aynsley
and other famous names. Sadly the pottery industry is in decline owing to
cheaper goods being made in the Far East. All members of a family would be
employed in a pottery firm but now there is much employment as most of the
other industries are connected with china manufacturing.
Do you remember "Whats my Line" in the early days of television? There was
one particular occupation that was carried out in the Potteries: "saggar
makers bottom knocker. Saggars are prized these days for using as large
plant pots for the garden.
Sorry about all that, one thought led to another!
I must go and serve Sunday lunch. I know my place is in the kitchen! I
assume your poor wife has to make the bread as well.
Iechyd da,
Margaret

Hi Margaret,
I put my twopennyworth in and admit that I missed the one you found and by
the looks of it and the Maurice name it appears that you have cracked it.
I
humbly withdraw my list!!
Keith Roberts.
PS. I didn`t have the census on at the time but as I was waiting for my
good
wife to cook my eggs, bacon, fried bread, tomatoes, sausage, black
pudding,
mushrooms and fresh toast and marmalade, I thought I would have a
look!
