Hi Listers,
I'm looking for the ancestry of George Christopher TOI. It was understood that he was
born in Glasgow, Scotland about 1891. A search of the records in Edinburgh has yielded
only the name variant TOY or TOYE. Even with those spellings the information yielded is
inconclusive.
On checking further I have learned that there may be a Welsh connection rather than, or in
addition to, a Scottish one. Apparently members of the TOI family were known to be living
in the Welshpool area during the latter part of the 20th century.
What's in a name ? According to a Welsh source the name TOI in Welsh means roof or
thatch. The name as spelled also appears quite frequently in Cornwall, but nowhere in
Scotland !
Perhaps SKS could check the parish records for Welshpool for occurrences of the TOI name
in the 19th or 20th century. Any information at all would be appreciated.
Regards,
Bernard
