Kelli,
I'm in the U.S., as well -- coincidentally, about 30 miles north of Detroit
in Rochester Hills.
Newtown is near Llanidloes and is actually the larger town of the two -- you
shouldn't have any trouble locating it, unless you need to input Powys
instead of MGY. Perhaps the use of the postal code might help -- SY16 2LA
is one I have for Newtown.
I believe "Pinchiner" was the name of a house/cottage in Lower Green -- in
the 1851 Census, the houses weren't named. As I said, it would be quite
easy to order the birth certificate. Even with the clue of the sister, Mary
Ann b. 1844, I cannot find an EDWARDS family in that area with a daughter of
that age. Perhaps they were already living in S. Wales and hadn't moved up
to Newtown until John's birth in May.
Once you have the birth certificate, it should be easier to proceed.
Best regards,
Julie Preston

Thanks, Julie. At least I know there was a Lower Green. I have
tried
Multimap.com but can't find Newtown, MGY. Is it now called
Llanidloes? Can you give me an idea of the town's location? Living in
the USA, I'm at a total loss.
The entry in the Bible for John W. Edwards is written on the flyleaf (no
pages designed for family records), it reads: John W. Edwards was born
May the 30 in the year 1851 at Penchiner Lower Green Newtown -
Montgomeryshire North Wales.
Also on the flyleaf - His sister Mary Ann was born 2 Mar 1844, Sarah
Edwards b 10 Sep 1852, Ann Edwards died 28 June 1863, Martha Edwards
died 2 Mar 1865. Margaret ??
The coal mining information comes from a letter from a 70ish female
relative who admitted she couldn't remember much about the family. (i
didn't receive the letter til after that lady was gone).
Excerpts from letter: John was a little boy when his father died - his
mother remarried, a man named Merideth. John's mother died while he
was a little boy & John went to live with his grandparents (no idea
wheather maternal or paternal) - John worked in the mines before he was
9 years old.
John had 10 or 11 sisters, mostly older. John was brought to Detroit,
Michigan by his sister Margaret when he 16 years old.
There are a lot of possibilities there - but nothing concrete to work
with. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
God bless,
Kelli
In the 1851 Census for Newtown, Montgomeryshire (CD pub. by Powys FHS),
there is an area (street?) near Park Street called "Lower Green",
listing
approx. 18 separate households with that address. (There is also "Upper
Green", "Lower Yard Green" and "Frollick Green" in Newtown.)
There is
no
place in Newtown called anything like "Penchiner" or Pinchiner
