Hi Ted
Is this location near the Montgomery that I see on a map
near the Wales border with England?
According to Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles, 1904:
Forden is a parish and village 3 miles north of Montgomery.
There is a parish church at Forden / Ffordun. Welshpool also has a
parish church and is about 5 miles to the north of Forden.
For maps try:
Multimap at

Also a very useful Website which displays 19C Ordnance Survey maps:
http://www.old-maps.co.uk
The Powys County Archives Office Website lists parish registers
which survive and which are available on microfilm at the National
Library of Wales, Aberystwyth and at Powys Archives Office,
Llandrindod Wells.
http://archives.powys.gov.uk The list may be
under 'Local Studies Notes'.
From mid-1837 there are indexed birth records (if the person was
registered) kept at the General Register Office, Southport. Many
births were not registered in the early years of registration, as
the onus was on the local Registrar to record them. Penalties for
non-registration were imposed in the Births & Deaths Registration
Act of 1874.
You can check the GRO Birth Indexes on microfiche at LDS Family
History Centres.
See details for the GRO on the GENUKI Website at:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/RegOffice/ons.html
To order a birth certificate from the GRO Southport you need:
Surname, forename(s), registration district, volume number and page
number, quarter and year from the index.
An example from my own family history is:
Bewsey, Charles John, Hackney, 1b, 425, December Quarter 1901.
I am told that he may have lied about his age
Apparently this was quite common - some were only around 14 years of
age.

Subject: John Morgan-Town of Welchpool, County of Montgomery
Hopefully I am posting to the correct group.
According to a military record that I have for my ancestor, John
Morgan, he was
apparantly born in the parish of Farden, Town of
Welchpool in the County of Montgomery. The date of the entry is
March 1859 and he is listed as 20 years and 0 months old and his
religion is listed as Church of England. My questions are:
Is this location near the Montgomery that I see on a map near the
Wales border with England? My map isn't very detailed.
Do birth records exist for this period (approx 1839) for this area
and how would I go about getting the information from such a record?
I am told that he may have lied about his age to get into the
British Army. He ended up in India for 10 years before returning
home.
Thanks for any assistance.
