For some time an Australian 2nd cousin and I have been trying to unlock a mystery relating
to the above family. Thomas Meredith my gg/grandfather was born abt 1803 - census derived
and therefore slightly dubious, in Bettws Cedewain, MGY. We would like to know the exact
year if possible. Thomas died on 20 Apr 1852 so apart from the 1851 Census - no further
census info available, except for 1841 which has him as 38 - age abt 1803.
Thomas married twice, firstly to Ann Edwards on 28 Oct 1819 in Llandinam. Secondly to
Susan/Susanna/Susannah Morris on 31 Oct 1836 again in Llandinam. Both entries appear on
Gwynne's Marriage Index Mgy. On the second marriage Thomas was described as a widower
so we know there was an earlier marriage. We finally found Ann. Ann must have died
between these two dates and we would like to know when.
Thomas and Susan lived at Lluast/Lluest Farm Bettws Cedewain on the 1851 Census. Apart
from Thomas and Susan's children there appears a John born abt 1833 (census derived).
Again his actual birth/chr date would help. At one stage we were not sure if he was the
child of the first marriage or if he was illegitimate. Once we received the info on Ann
Edwards I immediately did an IGI parent search which did NOT show John at all. It did
however show the christening of a son Thomas on 6 Feb 1820 to Thomas Meredith and mother
Ann. This seems to tie in with the 1819 marriage and if John is also Ann's son,
Ann's death would have been between 1833 - 1836. The son Thomas did not appear on
Censuses, what happened to him?
If someone with access to Llandinam and/or Bettws Cedewain parish records could assist we
would be very grateful
Regards, David
