Berwyn,
Glad to help. I wouldn't count on his obituary showing his birthplace but
one never knows. It's really necessary to locate the family together (i.e.,
1901 Census) showing the birthplaces of both John and his wife.
I found the HUMPHREYS family in the 1851 Census of Montgomeryshire (CD pub.
by Powys FHS). This is valuable, as it shows John's *father-in-law*, who
was also a HUMPHREYS/HUMPHRIES, making Elizabeth's maiden name the same as
her married name. They probably had older children who were not at home or
were out 'in service. If you obtain the LDS microfilm of the Bishop's
Transcripts for Cemmes, you should be able to locate some of the baptisms of
the children and, hopefully, the marriage entry for John & Elizabeth, and so
on, going back into both HUMPHREYS families.
1851 Census, Parish of Cemmaes, MGY (Hamlet of Cwm Llune?)
HUMPHRIES John h m 38 Mason
MGY Cemmes Cwm Llune /f356/p15
HUMPHRIES Elizabeth w m 41
MGY Cemmes Cwm Llune /f356/p15
HUMPHRIES David s u 10 Scholar
MGY Cemmes Cwm Llune /f356/p15
HUMPHRIES Anne d u 2
MGY Cemmes Cwm Llune /f356/p15
HUMPHRIES Humphrey fl w 76 Pauper, Tailor
MGY Cemmes Cwm Llune /f356/p15

Julie Preston:
Thank you so very much for your accurate and prompt response to my
inquiry.
This appears to solve my dilemma. I am awaiting verification of his
birthplace from his obituary, and then I will know for sure, but this is
what the family tradition says.
