Alun,
Of course it is `strictly genealogy` when my allegiances are called to question!
I bow to your superior knowledge of the Norman heirarchy and their wrongdoings and
apologise to all my countrymen for my blasphemy and henceforth shall be known as a son of
Powys and not Montgomery.
When did you say you wanted me to subscribe to the Powys list Julie and John ?!!
Kind regards, Keith. ps. Mother came from Caergeiliog!!

Keith,
I read the measured comments in your letter which ended with the comment
that your ancestors came from Montgomeryshire not Powys. An interesting
comment to make but I wander why? Montgomeryshire is the only County in
Wales named after a Norman Baron, Robert de Montgomery, the right hand man
of William the Conqueror, although he was not part of the original invasion,
but came later. RdM was an oppressor of the Welsh tribes as were subsequent
Norman kings and the castles they built that survive to this day are
monuments to the oppression of the tribes that ultimately became the Welsh
people. To call yourself a son of Powys and not Montgomeryshire is to keep
faith with your Welsh roots.
On a personal note I cannot revere the castles of Wales because they
represent our oppression. Far better if they had all been pulled down and
used to make decent homes for the indigenous population.
My apologies for all those who believe this to be a misuse of this service-I
am conscious it is not strictly genealogy.
