Sue,
I'm posting my reply back to the Montgomeryshire list in case someone else
has any input. Additionally, I'm posting it to the Powys list as there may
be someone familiar with any WALTERS in the area. Suggest you subscribe to
both lists. I know we have several listers working on HAMER.
You don't mention where the family was living ca. 1851 and where you found
them in the 1881 Census.
There's an LDS Family History Centre in Chester, if I'm not mistaken. They
have microfilmed the Bishop's Transcripts for all of the Montgomeryshire
parishes and you should be able to locate Mary Ann's baptism (using the
parish of birth indicated in census returns), as well as the 1841 Census for
that parish. Might explain the EDMUNDS/HAMER surname issue. You'll also be
able to order microfilms for Aberystwyth/Llanbadarn Fawr, Cardiganshire.
If you do go to Newtown, the Newtown Area Library holds microfilms for all
of Montgomeryshire from 1841. Birth/marriage/death certificates can be
obtained for that area from the Newtown Supt. Registrar's Office.
Additionally, the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society now has a library in
Newtown. I would suggest you join the society and make use of their
facility, as well, if you decide to go there. Joining the society may help
put you in contact with people researching the same families.

Subject: Re: WALTERS HAMER/EDMUNDS
Hello Julie
Thank you for replying to my query.
Part of the family belongs to my "cousin" in Australia. (The
descendants of Walter Walters .....Gilbert,Gilbert and Walter
Alfred,Edith Isabell, Walter, Reginald and Peggy.) He is wanting to
find :-
a. Why Mary Ann, Nathaniel's wife called herself Edmunds on her
Marriage certificate and yet it states she was "formerly Hamer" on
her son's birth certificate. Nathaniel was still living.
b.Living descendants of Edith, Isabell etc. There was a bit of a
family rift apparently the cause of which is unknown.
As for me, I am the descendant of Frank Walters born 1880. He
also was cut off from the family who are a mystery. His daughter,
my 95 year old grandmother, insists that she had Aunts called Ada
and Ellen and an Uncle Richard and that they "took away" her
sister (who was really her older sisters illegitimate child) to bring up
as their own.She recalls a shoe business(Lanidloes?) and the fact
that one of the Aunts became a district Nurse....in Norwich (she
says?)They were strict Chapel.
Now according to 1881 census, George Walters, Franks Uncle,
had children called Adelaid (Ada?), Ellen and Richard and so they
seem to be cousins of Frank and second cousins of my
grandmother rather than Aunts and Uncle. There are also other
questions that living relatives could possibly answer.
I think that the family came from the Aberystwyth area prior to
Nathaniel and so I will be looking in that area.
.My family and that of my "cousin" appear to have moved away
from the Llanidloes, Newtown area and we wondered if there were
any descendants of the others still in the area and/or possibly
researching the Walters family.
We have not yet checked any source for Nathaniel Walters birth
around 1816 but think it may have been at Aberystwyth and the
father, John.
My husband and I suffer with intermittant ill health and my "cousin"
is in Australia, as I said and so I thought a letter to the list might
help in some way to fill in gaps prior to travelling to the Newtown
area for research.
I would be grateful for any information you may come across.
Best wishes
Sue
