Was this, perhaps, on the Shropshire Union canal? At that time it was a
very busy waterway, and there is a society dedicated to clearing it up and
making it navigable again. They might have records of the boats which
operated along the canal, along with the names of the masters. I think
you'll find it if you do a search on Montgomeryshire.

Just checking - are you sure it was Montgomeryshire? There is a Llandysul
in Cardiganshire as well as Llandyssil in Montgomeryshire.
