In 1861 one of my ancestors was Schoolmaster at Tregynon - I have this
information from the birth certificate of a daughter who was born there in
April 1861. However, he was in the Leeds area in 1857 (from another birth
certificate), and had another daughter in Leeds in 1865, which suggests that
his time in Tregynon would have been about 7-8 years maximum.
As a Yorkshireman he would not have spoken Welsh, and it has been suggested
to me that the reason he went back to Yorkshire was that Welsh language
teaching was to be introduced, and he would have been unable to do this. Can
anyone tell me, please, when elementary schools would have started to use
Welsh?
Thanks for any help,
Arthur Kennedy
