Dear Montgomeryshire List
I'm searching for information on the
MANTLE family of NEWCHAPEL near Llandinam & Llanidloes.
Evan Mantle (c1809 - 1887), born in Radnorshire, lived at Newchapel and
I've traced him on the various censuses from 1841 onwards at Pant y
Celyn, Newchapel. In 1871 and 1881, one of his sons, William Mantle
(1840-1901) lived a few miles away at Tylwch.
Evan Mantle's occupations included labouring and lead mining. He married
a few times and a number of his sons later moved south to work in the
Glamorganshire coal mines. I know that one son and probably his father
were lead miners at Gorn (2 miles south east of Llanidloes). Does anyone
have further information about Gorn Lead Mine or the Newchapel and
Tylwch area, please? Did your ancestors live and work here, perhaps?
I'm looking for anything featuring the wider Mantle family as well as
any detail about social conditions in the locality during the 19th
Century.
I believe that some descendants of the above Mantle family still live in
the old county of Montgomeryshire but I have not been able to make
contact.
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.
