David,
Where did you obtain "birth" dates and places for Evan, John & Mary and
then
put that together with marriages that occurred in Trefeglwys? Do you know
for a fact they were *born* in Llangadfan or were they shown "of the parish
of Llangadfan" at the time of their marriage -- not necessarily the same
thing. There was a very extended established HUMPHREYS family in/around
Trefeglwys --- I'm surprised that 3 people from Llangadfan would come to
Trefeglwys to marry, especially the Mary HUMPHREYS you mention. Can it be
that you looked for a 'match' in the IGI and came up with these
combinations? Do you have the marriage certificates for the marriages
you've cited?
The original parish registers for Trefeglwys have been deposited at the
National Library of Wales. The Bishop's Transcripts for Trefeglwys (filmed
by the LDS) end in 1837. The post-1837 registers are the ones you would
need to locate these marriages and look for any baptisms of children, if
they stayed in Trefeglwys (as Evan & Dorothy did, at least for their first 3
children). Likewise, you would have to access the parish registers (or
nonconformist registers) for the other 2 couples, in whichever parish they
lived after their marriage. In the case of Evan & Dorothy (below), they
probably had additional children in the parish of Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa
so you'd need to find those later registers. Alternatively, you could send
to the Supt. Registrar's office at Welshpool for birth certificates of
children born there.
A check of the 1851 Census for Montgomeryshire (CD pub. by Powys FHS) lists
the following --- some details differ a bit but the first couple looks to be
the right Evan HUMPHREYS (even though his birthplace is listed Trefeglwys)
and wife Dorothy. (In my experience, most of the HUMPHREYS were from
Trefeglwys and surrounds and were more often than not blacksmiths.) I was
unable to locate a John & Elizabeth that fits your information (found 1
couple in Trefeglwys but they'd been together more than 5 years). I've
listed a *possibility* for the Mary HUMPHREYS you've listed, about the same
age and born in Trefeglwys. This family is related to my HUMPHREYS and the
'smithy' at Llawryglyn is now standing in the Welsh Folk Museum at St.
Fagans, Cardiff ("The Llawr-y-glyn Smithy").
