Hello List,
I'm new to this list, and am looking for connections to my
great-grandfather Owen Jones of Newtown.
Owen's father was David JONES, a grocer in Bryn Street in Newtown, probably
in the 1870's or 1880's. His wife's name was Sarah and she's listed in my
great-aunt's genealogical notes as "storekeeper." One of them, probably
Sarah, died Feb. 20, 1882, aged 76 years. They had four children noted by my
grt-aunt (order is as listed, not necessarily birth order):
1) My great-grandfather Owen JONES, no dates available, who "served seven
years . . . learning business" at "David Edwards' blacksmith shop" in
Crown
St. just south of Weir St. I have no dates for this, but by 1869 Owen Jones
was in the US meeting my great-grandmother (a BEBB from Newtown). He became
her second husband, but when she died in 1880 he gave away all the children
and was never heard from again!
2) David JONES, no dates available. The notes list his address as Board
School, Mold, Flintshire, Wales, but again, no date. No mention of a wife's
name, but a list of nine children with their ages in 1890:
Frederick Ernest 21, David Maurice 20, Edward William 19, Percy 16, Rupert
15, Cecil 13, Reginald 9, Algernon Trevor 8, Adela Sarah 7.
3) Elsie JONES BRAYNE, "store Welshpool" a later note says "Nellie
Brayne,
Newtwon, Wales, must be a sister of Elsie Jones Brayne, Welshpool, Wales"
4) Ann JONES DAVIES, "Newtown, Wales. Sent me a flannel shawl"
These notes are partly from my great-aunt's genealogical notebook and
partly off of a 1902 Ordinance Survey map of Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn that
my great-aunt annotated when she visited Newtown early in the 20th century.
She has identified the names of several stores and their proprietors as well
as noting where various ancestors lived. If any of this might be of interest
to anyone, I'd be happy to share. And, If my JONES family matches with
anyone else's, I'd love to hear from you.
