Julie,
Thank you so much for all the good information and help; this is
very useful.
The document I am quoting from is a Family Group Sheet on which my
my Aunt recorded Charles Samuel Thomas and his wife's information.
These are my grandparent's.
Charles Samuel THOMAS
b. 8 FEB 1859 (on this sheet, but on another paper, the day is different)
Llangynog "Tymaur".
Christened: 27 FEB 1859
Llangynog Rectory by Rev. R. Jones Oswestry Wales
You did have the correct information on the 1851 census.
Grace JONES was married to Cadwaladr THOMAS's father.
Catherine, ____?___, and Cadwaladr were born. Their
father died when he or they were young and Grace remarried
Edward Humphrey's. Elizabeth Humphrey's is Cadwaladr's
half sister.
I do not have the name of Cadwaladr's father, but it could be Charles
since the naming pattern in the family seemed to be traditional and
Charles was the first born child. I would like to be able to find the
information on them if possible.
In 1878, I believe, Cadwaladr and Charles moved to North America; this
is why they are not found on the census for 1881. Charles's mother is
on the 1881 census in Leichester, England, I believe, with some of her
children. In 1882 she appears to have arrived in the states.
Grace JONES was born Ty Nant, Cynllwyd, Merionethshire, North Wales.
I believe the Cynllwyd to be Cym Cynllwyd; this is near Bala Lake.
According to the 1851, the year would have been 1808. Her sister,
Eleanor/Ellinor, also my gggrandmother, was born 1806, same place, so
the year for Grace on the 1851 is in the correct range.
with gratefulnes and kind regards,
Glynda
What document are you quoting from? If it's an entry in the
family bible,
you can also obtain the actual birth certificate directly from the
Superintendent Registrar's office (Llanfyllin & Welshpool, I believe).
Also, the LDS (Mormons) have microfilmed the Bishop's Transcripts of the
parish register for the parish of Llangynog and they include the year 1859.
You can order the microfilm from the nearest LDS family history center and
locate the christening entry and, if you're lucky, perhaps the marriage
entry for the parents, although if the bride was from another parish, you
might find their marriage entry in her home parish.
In my experience, only the parish church (i.e., Church of England, now
Church in Wales) would have a "rectory". This would be the established
church at the time.
Many nonconformists (i.e., Methodists, etc.) would still use the parish
church for events such as christenings, marriages and burials, even if they
attended 'chapel' service. It appears there wasn't a Methodist chapel in
the parish of Llangynog around 1859 -- the one listed (Penuel, Calvinistic
Methodist) shows records begin in 1875. They may have had meetings in a
local farmhouse prior to that time, though, and there may have been other
chapels in nearby parishes that people could travel to.
From the 1851 Census for Montgomeryshire (CD pub. by the Powys FHS), this is
the only entry in that area for a Cadwaladr THOMAS -- he's listed with an
's' for 'son', but it looks like he should've been listed as
'sv' for
'servant'. Note that he was born in Merionethshire (MER), parish of
Llangower.
No sign of any Grace JONES in that area -- it's very near the border with
Denbighshire and Merionethshire, so she could've been from one of those
counties.
1851 Census, Parish of Llangynog, Montgomeryshire:

I checked the 1881 Census for Wales and could not find Cadwaladr, Grace, or
Charles THOMAS at all. Did they emigrate?
