Loretta,
This is very strange.
I've checked the 1851 Census for Montgomeryshire (CD pub. by Powys FHS) and
there wasn't a single person anywhere in Montgomeryshire with the surname
WIDDY (nor any variation in spelling). Not anything even close --- WIGLEY's
are there, but no WIDDY's whatsoever.
In the 1881 UK Census (England, Scotland, Wales, Channel Islands, Isle of
Man and Royal Navy) the *only* person with the surname WIDDY is one George,
b.1860 in Bedfordshire, working as a servant in Hertfordshire.
If you have no reason to doubt his surname and his birthplace, however, you
can order the microfilm of the Newtown Parish Church Bishop's Transcripts
from an LDS (Mormon) family history center and, hopefully, locate his
baptism in 1829. Civil Registration did not begin until July 1837 in the UK
so certificates are not available for events prior to July 1837 and one must
check the original parish registers or Bishop's Transcripts.
Good luck!
Julie Preston

Subject: WIDDY family
Hello all,
I'm new to this list and posting my surname interest of WIDDY. Charles
WIDDY
came to Australia in 1852. Charles was born about 1829 in Newtown,
Montgomeryshire. On certificates he gives his parents as Charles WIDDY and
Winifred JONES. I live in Australia and don't know much about Welsh
records - would it be possible to find a birth registration for Charles?
Or
a baptism record or marriage for his parents? I have loads of info on
the
family in Australia if anyone's interested, but have had no joy at all
with
the Welsh side.
Many thanks,
Loretta Thomas
