An interesting observation, I didn't realise the time indicated a
twin. I've
looked at the Free BMD site and there is also a Hannah PUGH registered in
the same quarter, same place and only a couple of pages further on, so I
guess you are right.
Looking for PUGHs in Wales is a bit of a needle in a haystack effort!
Our PUGH family emigrated to Canada in the late 1840s and I am trying to
find confirmation of family "records"
Regards
Elizabeth Pugh (by marriage)
I am not sure where Pentrevin is in Montgomeryshire, but I do know that
Montgomeryshire is a "difficult" place to deal with in regard to Welsh
nomenclature.
Montgomery borders onto '"Welsh Shropshire" which kept the language and
traditions of Wales well into the 1800's, but which adopted English Surname
patterns in the early 1700s. Parts of Montgomeryshire are also very much in
"Welsh Wales" where patronymic naming patterns were used as late as the
1890's.
Depending where in MGY your Pugh ancestor, who emigrated in 1840, was from,
his/her father (even his/her siblings) may not have used the "Surname" Pugh
at all.
In parts of Montgomeryshire in the 1840's and earlier, "Evan Pugh," may well
be recorded in baptism, as eg:
"Evan the son of Hugh William".
So if you can't find a "Pugh" who fits your data, try looking for a
"son of
Hugh" who may fit instead.
Hope this helps rather than confuses.
All the best
Alwyn
