Roger,
Thank goodness for other listers who take the extra time to check further on an inquiry as
it turns out I mistakenly checked the wrong part of the 1851 Census Index when I searched
for your Joseph Mills in *Newtown, Montgomeryshire* (Montgomeryshire is one of three
counties that now comprise the larger county of Powys).
Derek Savage pursued the Newtown theory and found your Joseph Mills in Albion Yard,
Newtown, Montgomeryshire, in 1851:
1851 Census, Parish (and town) of Newtown (CD pub. by Powys FHS):
SMITH Samuel h m 52 Spinner
WIL Wilton Albion Yard /f202/p39
SMITH Mary w m 46 Spinner's wife
RAD Rhaiader Albion Yard /f202/p39
MILLS Joseph ld m 49 Weaver
WIL Westbury Albion Yard /f202/p39
LLOYD John ld u 36 Weaver
DEN Llangollen Albion Yard /f202/p39
As you can see, the head of household was also from Wiltshire.
Albion Yard consisted of approx. 10 households at the time -- many involved in the woollen
trades as well as other labourers.
I'll send along the actual image that Derek sent to me in a separate email.
Sorry for the confusion -- at least you now know it was Newtown and not Newport!
(Thanks, Derek! Good work!)
Regards,
Julie Preston

Subject: 1851 census for Newport
Hello there,
Thanks for your reply regarding Newport,I understood that the list was
for Montgomeryshire which I was told was the old name for Momouthshire.I apologise if I
have got this wrong
