Sheila,
I was able to locate probable christenings for both Sarah Owens and Joseph Nicholas using
the IGI. It's imperative that you obtain the LDS microfilms of the Bishop's
Transcripts, however, to verify the details and follow the rest of their family events.
Also, you'll need to obtain their marriage certificate which will confirm the names
(and occupations) of both of their fathers -- this will corroborate the other information
found.
IGI
Sarah EVANS or OWEN
Chr. 03 Jan. 1814, Trefeglwys (Parish Church)
Father: William OWEN
Mother: Elizabeth EVANS
Source: LDS Film #0104590
A review of the BT's for Trefeglwys (LDS Film #0104590) will reveal whether William
OWEN eventually married Elizabeth EVANS as often happened.
Also, you should look for Sarah under both surnames in the 1841 Census for Trefeglwys.
I believe Joseph's age was off in the 1851 Census when he indicated he was 40 years
old when he was actually 32 - likely not something his wife wished to highlight for the
census enumerator! ;-)
This IGI entry seems very likely as the same couple also had a son named Thomas christened
in Berriew in 1820. If Joseph lived most of his life in Berriew he probably always
assumed that's where he was born.
IGI
Joseph NICHOLAS
30 May 1819, Llanfair Caereinion (Parish Church)
Father: David Nicholas
Mother: Elizabeth
Source: LDS Film #0104798 (BT's, Llanfair Caereinion)
(Census entries from 1851 Census of Montgomeryshire, CD pub. by Powys FHS and available
for purchase on their website)
1851 Census, Parish of Llanllwchaiarn:
NICHOLAS Joseph h m 40 Weaver MGY
Berriew Machine House /f254/p1
NICHOLAS Sarah w m 38
not given Machine House /f254/p1
NICHOLAS Margaret d u 8 Scholar not
given Machine House /f254/p1
NICHOLAS Arthur s u 5 Scholar not
given Machine House /f254/p1
Using the online website
www.northwalesBMD.org.uk I found birth register index entries for
Margaret in 1842, Arthur in 1845 and Ann in 1852 - all registered at Newtown. This makes
sense, given that Joseph would've been only 22 when Margaret was born -- likely they
married shortly before.
A search for a possible marriage for this couple wasn't so successful -- the nearest I
came was an 1842 marriage of a *John* NICHOLLS to a Sarah EVANS or a Miriam JONES in a
Newtown *Civil* Ceremony in 1842 but because there are two marriages per register page,
there's no way of knowing which one he married and which one married another man
(William EVANS) without sending for the certificate. I would urge you to send for this
certificate as there may have been an error in transcription. If this marriage is
correct, Sarah married using her *mother's* surname, not OWENS. (I gather you
obtained the OWENS surname from the birth certificate of your great-grandmother, Ann
Eliza?)
I believe this is the entry for Joseph's parents -- note the mother's birthplace
was Llanfair Caereinion -- it was common to have the first child at the home of the
woman's parents:
1851 Census, Parish of Manafon, Montgomeryshire:
NICHOLAS David h m 58 Miller
MGY Llangyniew Lower Mill /f459/p3
NICHOLAS Elizabeth w m 57 Miller's wife MGY
Llanfair Lower Mill /f459/p3
LOYD Eliza vs m 29
MGY Llanfair Lower Mill /f459/p3
NICHOLAS Mary d u 23
MGY Welshpool Lower Mill /f459/p3
NICHOLAS Eliza d u 9
MGY Manafon Lower Mill /f459/p3
NICHOLAS William s u 17 Miller's servant
MGY Llanrhaiadr Lower Mill /f459/p3
LEE John sv u 17 Miller's servant
MGY Manafon Lower Mill /f459/p3
MILLS William sv u 15 Miller's servant
MGY Llanfair Lower Mill /f459/p3
Neither of Sarah's parents are readily findable in 1851 -- a few possibilities for
Elizabeth but nothing pointing to a Trefeglwys connection. It's possible she ended up
marrying someone else after Sarah's birth so only a review of the Trefeglwys BT's
will help to sort out what became of that couple.
I hope this helps.

Julie Preston
