All,
I don't know if it's really relevant, however my GGF John HUGHES farmed Upper
Trewylan, Deythur in 1881 and he had moved to Gelli Fm, Llansantffraid by 1891 whilst his
brother Evan HUGHES farmed Trederwen Fm, Deythur in 1881, then by 1891 he was at Waen Fm,
Llansantffraid which is about only a mile from his borther.
Both brothers were born over the Berwyns at Y Garnedd/Ty Tan-y-Graig, Llanfor, MER, their
male siblings all moved into MGY but seemed to settle around Llanwyddyn & Llangadfan.
John HUGHES d 1919 whilst still farming at Gelli Fm.
Evan HUGHES was at Calcott Hall, Llandysilio, MGY in 1901, but I understand that a
descendant of Evan HUGHES's still farms at the Waen Fm.
If any of this rings bells please get in touch.

Keith and Alan,
Further to Keith's terrific findings from the Llansanffraid PR's,
"Barracks" (4 of them) were enumerated in 1881 following Llansanffraid Mill
House in the area known as "Deythur", followed by a few more cottages called
"Waen" (something) and then the apparent manor house & farm, Trederwyn Hall
and Trederwyn Farm. Everyone in this area of Deythur seems 'attached' to Trederwyn
-- gamekeeper, farm labourers, domestic servants, etc., while George was working at the
other end of Deythur at Lower Trewylan. There was also an "Upper Trewylan" farm
of 270 acres. Perhaps they were all tenant farms of the Trederwyn estate.
No sign by 1881 of John & Mary HUGHES, parents of George, anywhere in
Montgomeryshire.

Julie Preston

Subject: Subject: [WLS-MGY] Elizabeth LEWIS baptised in LLandriniov circa 1853-55
Hi Allan, I have copied your reply to Julie Preston as it holds the information that I
have worked from.
There is a baptism for George HUGHES in St. Fraidds Church, Llansantfraidd ym Mechain MGY
as follows:
October 17th. 1858, parents John and Mary HUGHES, Barracks, Llansantfraidd.
This is the first time I have come across this Barracks address so I don`t know where it
is in Llansantfraidd. There is another baptism for a sibling of Georges:
Emma, November 23rd. 1856, parents John and Mary HUGHES, Barracks, Llansantfraidd. There
are other baptisms attributed to the same parents but a different address and I wasn`t
sure about them but on checking up on the 1861 census for Llansanntfraidd some of the
other names are there so I will give you these which I think are correct:
Thomas son of John and Mary Trederwen, bap. Nov. 27th. 1853 (shown on 1861 census)
Hannah dau of John and Mary Trederwen bap Dec. 15th. 1850 "
James dau of John and Mary Trederwen, bap Dec 10th. 1848 (not on census)
Eleanor dau of John and Mary Trederwen, bap March 7th. 1847 (on census)
Mary Jane dau of John and Mary Trederwen, bap Dec 21st. 1845 (not on census)
Mary HUGHES the mother is not present at 1861 but John is not shown as a widow but maybe
the enumerator made a mistake. Also, I couldn`t find John HUGHES at 1871?
Here`s the family at 1851:
HUGHES, John, h, m, 32, labourer,, MGY Llansantffraid, cottage, /f470/p6
HUGHES, Mary, w, m, 29, , MGY Llansantffraid, cottage, /f470/p6
HUGHES, John, s, u, 6, , MGY Llansantffraid, cottage, /f470/p6
HUGHES, Jane, d, u, 5, , MGY Llansantffraid, cottage, /f470/p6
HUGHES, Elinor, d, u, 3, , MGY Llansantffraid, cottage, /f470/p6
HUGHES, James, s, u, 2, , MGY Llansantffraid, cottage, /f470/p6
HUGHES, Hannah, d, u, 7m, , MGY Llansantffraid, cottage, /f470/p6
(Courtesy of Montgomeryshire Family History Society 1851 census CD.)
The cottage refers to quite a number of workers cottages on the Trederwen estate.
No baptism showing for Elizabeth LEWIS in St. Fraidds so you should maybe looking at
chapel records for her. No LEWIS families living in Llansantfraidd in 1861 with the father
as Edward LEWIS .
Hope this lot helps get you there,
Keith Roberts, Colwyn Bay.

First may I thank you for your efforts. However, I fear that
inadvertently I may have misled you.
Elizabeth LEWIS married George HUGHES on 28 Sep 1884 in Llandrinio in
the parish church "according to the Rites etc of the Church of
England". So I guess the extra information which might have been available
from a Calvinist Methodist register is not to be expected!
However, the marriage certificate records her age as 30? (bad second
digit, but his age is clearly 28). In the 1901 Census on-line index,
both of them are recorded as being 46 yrs, but she was illiterate or
there could have been a mistranscription. Anyway, she was a spinster, her
address at the time of marriage was Llandrinio, and her father's
occupation was Labourer. I assumed she was born & baptised in Llandrinio.
I followed your advice, and discovered an Elizabeth LEWIS born in
1853 in the subdistrict of Llansanffraid-ym-mechain - Ref FFRAID/06/36. I
presume this reference number will enable me to order a copy of the
birth certificate from Welshpool?
As you correctly say, Elizabeth's birth certificate is the key
document here, and with your help (especially the fact of Llandrinio being
within the subdistrict of Llansanffraid-ym-mechain), I am hopeful that I
have identified the correct record. (As you are well aware, Elizabeth
LEWISes were very common in Montgomeryshire.) Without establishing where
Elizabeth was born, the location of her parents in 1851 remains very
speculative - they could have moved to Llandrinio before or after they
married. It would seem more feasible to identify the family in 1861 with
Edward LEWIS as Head, and Elizabeth as his 8yrs old daughter.
Anyway, you have given my enquiries a much needed boost, for which I
am very grateful. Thank you.>
