Can anyone help me with this problem
I have a family living at Barns, Castlewright, Montgomery, in the 1881
census but I have no idea where this might be.
===================
Dear Steve,
Castlewright is a township in the parish of Mainstone in Shropshire. Part of
this parish was in Montgomeryshire.
Examining the 1881 census shows that the property called Barns was
enumerated between Pentrewilly and Bank.
Pentrewilly is identified (as Pentre-Willey) on the detailed UK Ordnance
Survey 'Landranger' 1:50,000-scale map (sheet 137). You can see the relevant
3-kilometre square section of this map at the Streetmaps website
www.streetmap.co.uk/
In the search section near the top of the Streetmaps homepage, select the
'Landranger' option, enter SO274910 into the search field and click the
Search button. When the initial map appears, change to the more useful
Landranger map format by clicking the area midway between the [+] and [-]
zoom buttons at bottom right of the map.
You'll see Pentre-Willey identified by name and by a small orange arrow near
the centre of the map.
Barns is not shown, but must have been in the same area.
You can call up a highly detailed (1:10,560-scale) late 19th century map of
this area by going to the Old Maps website at
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
On the main page, select the "Co-ordinates" option in the search facility
(near top left of the page). In the search field enter the co-ordinates
327450,291050 (without any spaces) and click the Search button. From the two
links which appear, choose the Montgomeryshire option.
When the small map appears, click on the "Enlarged view" button below the
map. A highly detailed large map of the area will open in a new window,
centred on Pentrewilly. The lower section of the map appears blacked out --
choosing the Shropshire option would display this part of the map.
The Shropshire (England) section of the GENUKI website
www.genuki.org.uk/
offers the following description of the parish of Mainstone, extracted from
"The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland" (1868):
--------------
MAINSTONE, a parish partly in the hundred of Clun, county Salop, and partly
in the hundred and county of Montgomery, 4½ miles S.W. of Bishop's Castle,
its post town. It is situated on Offa's Dyke, and includes the townships of
Castlewright, Edenope, Knuck, and Reilth. The village is a small
agricultural place. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Hereford,
value £293, in the patronage of the lord chancellor. The church is dedicated
to St. John the Baptist. The parochial charities produce about £4 16s. per
annum. A school for boys and girls is supported by subscription.

Kind regards,
John
