Hi Eluned and Julie,
This is the only person living in Wales at the time of the 1881 Census with
the first name Gamaliel, the place of Birth was just given as Wales which is
very unusual.

The above is not relevant but proves it was still in use at the time of the
1881 Census . There were five for the Midlands Region.
The name is male and means recompense of God (Hebrew).
My 'best' friend in Llanidloes in Montgomeryshire where I lived until I was
six was an Eluned. It has always been one of my favourite names.
Regards,
Margaret Harvey

Eluned,
While there were numerous LLOYD's in Montgomeryshire, I've never come
across
the forename "Gamaliel", but that isn't to say there
wasn't such a person
born in Montgomeryshire.
Have you used the "Given Name" Index for Montgomeryshire in the LDS IGI?
Note: This is *not* included on the online LDS website version -- you'd
have to go to the LDS FHC nearest you and use it there, searching for a
baptism for any person with the given name Gamaliel in Montgomeryshire.
This might be the best way to pinpoint the parish.
Good luck!
