As you all probably know, the 1901 Census for Wales is now on
ancestry.co.uk.
When the 1901 Census was first published on the Internet by the PRO, there
were a lot of complaints about the standard of the index - especially with
regard to the spelling of Welsh place names.
Ancestry has taken and adapted the PRO index for its offering, and has
succeeded to make a bad job worse. Every entry where the PRO transcribers
had worked out that the county in the "where born" column was written as
"Mont" have been automatically changed to "Monmouthshire" by
Ancestry!
So if you are unsure if your ancestor was born in Machynlleth or Darowen,
Newtown or Welshpool don't just rely on looking for John Jones born in the
county of Montgomeryshire - try Monmouthshire too!!!
All the best
