The following indexes have been added to the North Wales BMD
database:
Machynlleth Registration District:
Civil marriages
1838 to 1918
(3490 marriages)
Until 1898, the Registrar had to be present, by law, at all marriage
ceremonies that took place in Nonconformist chapels and Roman Catholic
churches - and also, of course, at those that took place in the
Register Office! He/she recorded all these marriages in the same
Register - hence they are all described as "civil" marriages.
The parishes in Machynlleth registration district were:
Machynlleth
Penegoes
Llanfihangel Genau'r Glyn (part)
Tywyn
Llanwrin
Cemmaes
Darowen
Llanbrynmair
Many thanks to my team of volunteers for Montgomeryshire; for their work in photocopying,
transcribing and
checking the above indexes; and to the staff of Machynlleth Register
Office, for their help and assistance with the project.
