Brenda,
These are all of the EGERTON (and variants) in Montgomeryshire in the 1851
Census (CD published by the Powys FHS).
1851 -- Parish of Llanllwchaiarn, MGY:
EDGERTON Thomas h w 55 Tailor SAL Ellesmere Ruins /f261/p15
EDGERTON William s u 15 Tailor MGY Bettws Ruins /f261/p15
1851 -- Parish of Llangyniew, MGY:
EGGERTON, JOHN H M 31 SHOE MAKER LLANFIHANGEL MGY HENDAFARN 23/15
EGGERTON, MARY W M 45 LLANGYNIEW MGY 23/15
EGGERTON, JOHN S 8 LLANGYNIEW MGY 23/15
1851 -- Union Workhouse, Parish of Llanfyllin, MGY
EGERTON, David in u 65 form. shoemaker MGY Llanfihangel Union House
/f378/p14
If you've found them somewhere in the 1851 Census, perhaps it would help if
you gave us the full entry, including birthplaces of each. (You said, "they
seem to think John came from Mont.")
Marriage records aren't consistent when dealing with someone's father who
was deceased at the time -- sometimes it's written, sometimes it's not. I
suppose if the bride/groom didn't volunteer their father was deceased, it
was presumed they were living.

Julie Preston

Hi Julie--I belong to the DYFED list & was advised to check out
your area
as
there are very few Egertons in Card.& someone in Mont. was
interested in
the
name--the earliest I can find on their records is on the 1851 census.
which
has Ann- mother-widow, John 1828c-son & Catherine1830c- daughter-
yet in
1853 when Catherine married it has her father William occ Carpenter (I
would
have thought it would have said deceased). They seem to think John
came
from
Mont.
