I have sent this to POWYS & MONTGOMERYSHIRE lists, so apologies to thos
seeing this twice.
I am new to both lists. I have traced my ancestors back to a William HUNT
living in Aberdare, aged 41(in the 1881 census) born Kerry, Montgomeryshire,
(i.e. born ca. 1840). William Hunt's 1869 marriage certificate gives his
father's name as Edward HUNT, profession farmer.
I have bought microfiches for the 1841 census for Montgomery, the index for
surnames "H" and the census details for the hundred of Montgomery, which
includes Kerry. I found only one William of anywhere near right age. This is
the entry : -
Address Forename Surname sex age
New House 1 Ann Hunt f 40
New House Mary Hunt f 9
New House Thomas Hunt m 5
New House William Hunt m 2
New House / Sarah Hunt f 3m
1 = Head of new household, / = last entry in household. (there was one other
household at the same address)
There is no father present as head of household. These Hunts lived in New
House in the township of Maenllwyd in the Parish of Kerry. Maenllwyd, and
especially New House, is nearer to Llanmerewig (ca. 1m.) than it is to Kerry
(>3m.), which probably explains why some of the children were christened
there.
(It appears that there were only 21 Hunts in the whole of Montgomery in
1841)
12-year-old Edward appears to have left home and be working as a servant at
Twll.
HUNT Edward 12 Male Servant Kerry Twll
If Ann (b. 1824) is still alive then she has also left home (working as a
servant?).
Question 1. In 1863 William's father Edward Hunt, is described as "Farmer",
not "deceased". Why is he not on the 1841 census? Was he away or was he dead
and the entry on the marriage certificate wrong?
The following is from the CD of the 1851 census transcription by the Powys
F H S. I can only find Thomas Hunt, living as a servant at a place called
"Woodlands", owned by a family called LLOYD HUMPHREYS. The rest of the Hunt
family has moved, married / remarried, died or emigrated. "Woodlands" must
be a large house / farm (409 acres) in the parish of Forden,
Montgomeryshire.
HUNT Thomas, servant. unmarried, age16, born MGY Llanmerewig.
I used the IGI to find all children of Edward and Ann Hunt.

William and Sarah were both born after the introduction of Civil
Registration in 1837. I have not as yet been able to find the index entry
for William, and I have not yet looked for Sarah.
In the 1881 census there are six households living at "New House" in Kerry.
Question 2. Is this New House the same as the New House at Maenllwyd in the
1841 census, and is it one building or several?
I would also be grateful for any general information regarding the family
and their dwelling, as I hope to visit the Newtown area sometime in the not
too distant future.
I have not been able to trace Edward HUNT yet, or his wife Ann(e), or their
marriage, so any help here or suggestions where to look next would also be
much appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation
