Hi Jill,
The 1841 Census is not as comprehensive as the later ones. The place of birth is not given just a Y or N (Yes or No) as to whether the person was born in the county. Occupations are not included nor the relationship of occupants to the head of the household. Another disadvantage is that the ages of adults are rounded down to 5 and 0.
I think with records it is just a case of working through them hoping you will find the relevant information. Many of the records for the chapels in Wales are missing and this is a source of great annoyance for researchers.
Regards,
Margaret Harvey
Thank you Margaret,
Thank you for the web site. I was able to look up and find the different
census. In your opinion, how helpful is the 1841 census? I was able to
find my Thomas Jenkins in the 1851 in Tredegar Monmoutshire and it shows
him being born in Llanidloes. So I thought he might be there. He would be
16. Just did not know how much information was on the 41. I have never seen
it.
Also, I did see allot of films with church records but no idea what church
to go with. This is such a cold line for me. I have to dig and dig for any
new information I get. Any suggestions on what church records to go with?
Or should I wait until I can find more information. I have ordered so many
wrong films, I would like to have a more educated guess.
Thank you again for the help. This part of Wales is very new to me. Most
of my research has been in the south.

Jill,
The subscription address is Powys-l-request(a)rootsweb.com and the posting
address powys-l(a)rootsweb.com
There is at least one Jenkins on Powys.
As Margaret has pointed out, the Montgomeryshire list is more focussed and
a lot of people are on both. I suggest you try both for a while.
Cheers,
Malcolm

Hi Jill,
It is Margaret not Brian but don't worry!
This is the website of the I.G.I. and when you access it it you will see an option for "Family History Library Catalogue". Type in the place name "Llanidloes" or where ever you are researching and you will be given a list of records relating to the town and many of these can be loaned from the Family History Centres of the Church of the Latter-day Saints at a very low cost. You are very lucky to have a centre near you for your research as there are a vast amount of records available to view such as Parish Records. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
The Censuses were taken every ten years but the first one of any use to researchers is the 1841. You should also be able to loan these at the centres. The 1881 Census is now on the above website as well as the American and Canadian ones about the same time.
I liked the tale of the three Dies but suggest that their names might have been Dai a short form of the name David or Dafydd used in Wales although why all three sons had the same name beats me!
I hope the above helps.
Regards,
Margaret Harvey

It may help you to go to Hugh Wallis`s excellent IGI site to look for Jenkins
births

Any `finds` will generally give you the FHS film you need to look at.

Hello Jill,
This list is usually quiet but can be very effective as we are all
researching in Montgomeryshire which is now part of Powys. I was born in
Llanidloes in 1941 although we moved to England in 1948. One of my earliest
memories is of a Jenkins family who lived a few doors away, the father
Anthony was an engine driver.
According to the 1881 Census there were 37 people with the surname Jenkins
living in the town including this entry for a Thomas who gave his children
some very unusual names.

Margaret Harvey

Hi Brian,
Thank you for getting back with me.
I live in Alaska and it makes doing genealogy in Wales rather tricky.
This is what I know:
Thomas Jenkins was born in Llanidloes 1825ish. I have found him on the 51 and 61 census taken in Bedwellty Parish, Tredegar, Monmouthshire. I believe he died shortly there after. I found his wife married to another man in the '71 with their kids.
I have not been able to find him any earlier than this. I do have one family story about Thomas' father. He had two brothers and all 3 lived to be over 100. The only names that we know of are Old Die, Young Die and Die Come Lately. Cute, I know but not very helpful when it comes to genealogy. Any advice?
What kind of census are there for pre '51? What is the best way to find any of the census. '51-71. I have access to the LDS family history center with the nice 81 on cd. I can go there on Fri. But what about the other years? Do you know if they are on films that can be ordered? Thank you for you help.

So do you have that address so I can subscribe there also?
I will still stay on here, I need all the help I can get.
Are there many Jenkins from the area?
Jill
Hi,
I am new to the list and have not seen much activity. I was wondering how many people us this list.
I am researching the JENKINS family. Thomas Jenkins born about 1835 in Llanidloes, Montgomershire. I have a bit more information but will wait to see if this is the right list for this.
Jill
Hello everyone
I just want to say a big thankyou to all who organised the open day on Saturday.
I arrive just after ten and by eleven fifteen I had found all the information
needed to further my American cousin's research into the Montgomery ancestors.
thank you all for making me welcome and guiding me in my search. And what a
great help the MI booklets are. I found most of my Eatons buried in the
churchyard of St Nicholas, Montgomery. I was also successful in searching the
1841 census, and bought the 1891 census CD. To anyone new to the Family History
game, these SC's are certainly worth their money.
