Last week I requested help to locate information on the Morris family, in particular Alfred Morris, who may appear in census records at Newtown, Montgomery.
I had a quick reply from 'Keith' who was able to confirm that the family is in the 1851 census records of Welshpool and not Newtown.
If there is SKS who has the census records of either or both of these towns for 1861 and 1871 and could possibly look up the family it would be greatly appreciated.
The family is Husband Ebenezer Morris, Wife Eliza (or Elizabeth) and children Charles, Margaret, Sarah and Alfred.
Thanking you

Yvonne,
I received your email but am not able to send directly to you, for some
reason -- Margaret Holmes also experienced the same thing and our emails
have been returned to us.
Margaret Holmes found your HUGHES family in 1851 in Machynlleth:
Edward Hughes h m 36 stonemason MGYAbercegir Pentrerallt St /f38/p6
Jane Hughes w m 33 MGYAbergavenny Pentrerallt St /f38/p6
Edward Hughes s u 1 MGY Machynlleth Pentrerallt St /f38/p6
(Note: There was obviously an error somewhere along the way, as Abergavenny
is in Monmouthshire and I believe "Abercegir" should read: "Abercegyr",
which appears to be a hamlet in the nearby parish of Darowen.)
With this information, you should be able to order the birth certificate for
Edward HUGHES (Jr.) directly from the Supt. Registrar at Machynlleth, thus
you'll find out Jane's maiden name.

Julie Preston

Hello All,
I recently joined this list after finding out that my great-great-
grandfather John HUGHES was born in 1828 in Montgomeryshire. I have
been looking around on the web and finding out a lot about the area,
but I have a couple of questions that I figured someone on the list
could answer easily.
According to the 1861 census of Rhymney, Monmouthshire, my gggf was
born in a place which looks like Llangedron. After consulting some
maps and the archives of this list, I have been able to find two
possible candidates for the correct place name: Llangadfan and
Llandgedwyn. The only problem is that if it is Llangadfan, it must
have been spelled with a "v" and not an "f," or if it's Llangedwyn,
it must have been spelled with an "i" instead of a "y." (There are no
ascenders or descenders on the letters in those positions.) Further,
I have come across a Llangedwyn, Montgomeryshire and a Llangedwyn,
Denbighshire. I thought these might be the same place, but part of
different counties at different times.
So what I'd like to ask you kind listers is:
Am I on the right track here? Is there one that is more likely than
the other? Are there any other possible places I've missed that could
fit the bill?
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer. Sincerely,
Mike Powers

Mike,
Was there no county designation in the census entry, along with
"Llangedron", as the birthplace of John HUGHES?
I looked for him in the 1881 Census but it would appear he had left Wales by
then.
Llangedwen is a parish in Denbighshire -- not in Montgomeryshire, but the
parish adjoins the border with Montgomeryshire and Llangedwen was enumerated
in the 1851 Census in the Llanfyllin Enumeration District, definitely
designated as "Parish of Llangedwen (Denbighshire)".
Llangadfan is definitely in Montgomeryshire and it's quite possible, if not
probable, that it would've been spelled with a 'v' rather than the 'f', due
to its pronunciation ('f' sounds like 'v') and that the enumerator was in
Monmouthshire rather than Montgomeryshire.
I was hoping the 1851 Census might supply the 'right' John HUGHES for you
but I found one born in each parish that are possibilities. Perhaps the
occupation or the family names might help narrow it down. If you could
obtain John HUGHES' marriage certificate, his father's name and occupation
would be stated. You could then use the LDS (Mormon) Fam. History Center
nearest you to order the microfilm of the Bishop's Transcripts for either
(or both) parish and locate his baptism entry, possibly his parents'
marriage, their baptisms, and so on.

If there is SKS who has the census from 1851, 1861 or 1871 could they possibly look up for me the following family
My grandfather, Alfred Morris, who died in Melbourne, Australia in 1917 states that he was born in Newtown, Montgomery in 1851.
His father is shown as Ebenezer Morris and his mother Elizabeth (nee Reynolds).
So far I have not been able to track down any information and any help would be greatly appreciated. I do not even have an exact birth date.
Thanking you

Hello Graeme,
No entries for an Ebenezer MORRIS in the Newtown area on the Powys FHS 1851
census but this is probably your family in Welshpool in 1851 with Alfred not
yet born.
Hope it helps you a little. Unless they moved that year it is likely that you
may find the birth of Alfred in Welshpool.
Regards,
Keith.
