Greetings to All,
Richard WATKIN( 1807-1893) and his wife Anne HUMPHREY (1811 - 1889) are buried in St. Gwynnog in Llanwnog. Since we are visiting Powys in May, I would like to know where St. Gwynnog can be found.
Also, I have the death record of Thomas WATKIN in Registration District, Newtown, Sub-district of Llanwnog in the county of Montgomery. Thomas died in 1903. Where might one find his will or his grave site. His last residence was Newhouse, Llandinam.
Thank you

I need some help with some geography in the vicinity of Llanfyllin,
Montgomeryshire
In researching the filmed records of the Old Chapel, Independent,
Llanfyllin, I discovered my g-g-grandparents with three of their
children's baptisms. Hugh JONES and Jane WILLIAMS had the following
children baptised:
Name of Child Parent's Residence Father's
Parish
Jane JONES Dugwin
Meirod
Margaret JONES Booneynhynfa Llangnier
Hugh JONES Booneynhynfa Llangneir
I have been unable to locate any of these places on my Michelin or
Odnance Survey 1:25,000 or 1:50,000 maps nor my small gazeteer.
Does anyone have any idea what the correct spelling or locations of
these places is?

Dear List
This week I was trying to find some information on-line about Pennant and
Pennant Melangell MGY and came across an entry mentioning churchyard surveys
for Pennant Melangell supplied by AnturTanat Cain. Previously I have
noticed a link on Genuki to this but the page always states "cannot be
displayed."
Does anyone know any further details about this?

Glynis
Hello all,
Thought I would pass on this message that was posted to the London mailing
list. I imagine they've been inundated with lookup requests for difficult
names, so I don't know how they'll cope with the flood of requests, but you
never know! :-) It's certainly very brave (and kind) of them to make the
attempt, though.

Hello,
Those on the Powys list will already know, but I wanted to also inform the
listers on the Montgomeryshire list that Trevor Griffiths has volunteered
the following items for lookups on the MGY pages of the Mid-Wales Lookup
Exchange at:
http://www.johngareth.freeserve.co.uk/johngareth.html
Monumental Inscriptions*:
Guilsfield Parich Church & Nonconformist Chapels (MGS MI/38)
Guilsfield Cemetery (MGS MI/39)
Llandysilio Parish Church (MGS MI/17)
*published by the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society
Trevor, thanks so much for volunteering!

I have a LARGE 3 lens michrofiche reader, in excellent working order, which i don't need,
which i will give free to anyone (preferably a FH society) who needs it. All i ask is that a small,
say £10, donation is given to Comic Relief.
Whoever takes it must pick it up.
I also have a Pentium 133Mhz computer (minus operating system), with CD ROM and monitor, which
i no longer need, which i will give to anyone (preferably a FH society) who needs it. All i ask is that a small,
say £30, donation is given to Comic Relief.
Whoever takes it must pick it up.
There are no catches and all is legit, it is just that i don't need them any more.
I would prefer them to go to a good home and that they do some good to Family
Historians as well as Comic Relief.
I have posted this to all the lists i subscribe to and hope the ADMINS do not
mind, as it is for charity.
First to respond will get.

Hello all,
Since the subject of books has been discussed recently, I thought I should
also mention that, for those interested in expanding your horizons in Welsh
research, the Rowlands have also published "Second Stages in Researching
Welsh Family History", ed. by John & Sheila Rowlands, pub. 1999 by the
Federation of Family History Societies (Publications) Ltd. in conjunction
with the Department of Continuing Education, University of Wales,
Aberystwyth, ISBN 1 86006 066 8
Another worthwhile purchase, in my opinion.
This book and the 2nd edition of "Welsh Family History, A Guide to
Research", *2nd Edition*,
ISBN 1 86006 065 X can be purchased online from the Society of
Genealogists bookstore (London) or in the U.S. from Genealogical Publishing
Co., Inc., Baltimore, MD -- website: www.genealogybookshop.com (Please
note: Borders Books in the U.S. only carries the *1st edition* of "Welsh
Family History, A Guide to Research", not the 2nd edition)

Hi Listers,
I'm new to this list and am searching for ANY info Sara EDWARDS b. 1852
in Newton, Montgomeryshire, N. Wales. I believe she had sisters:
Ann, Martha, Mary Ann and a brother John William. Hope someone can
help me out.
God bless,
Kelli in Michigan
Mary,
Now that I know I found the 'right' family for you, you may be interested in
this family who were living next door to Richard DAVIES in Llanllwchaiarn in
1851 -- skilled occupations do seem to run in families, so perhaps this
George is Richard's brother and it's very probable that the John DAVIES in
Newtown that I gave you in the last message is another brother, so you have
quite a lot to go on:
DAVIES George h w 56 Bricklayer MGY Newtown Llanfair Road /f330/p32
DAVIES Sarah d u 24 MGY Newtown Llanfair Road /f330/p32
DAVIES George s u 23 Bricklayer MGY Newtown Llanfair Road /f330/p32
DAVIES Esther d u 16 At home MGY Llanllwchaiarn Llanfair Road /f330/p32
BYWATER Sarah ld w 54 Pauper, B'layer's wife MGY Newtown Llanfair Road
/f330/p32
When you subscribed to this list, you received a "Welcome" message from the
listowner, Malcolm Bebb, which includes many online links for you to
explore. I suggest you thoroughly explore the links provided.
II suggest you also subscribe to the longer-established Powys list as there
are researchers there with overlapping interests in the counties of
Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Breconshire and your queries will reach a
wider audience. 'Lurking' on these two lists and reading the many exchanges
will help you to understand a lot of the uniqueness to researching in Wales.
To subscribe to the Powys list, send a message to
Powys-L-request(a)rootsweb.com (for mail mode), with nothing in the subject
line and only the word Subscribe in the body of the message. If you
prefer digest mode as I do, substitute a D in place of the L in the address.
I also recommend you join one or two of the family history societies for the
area: Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society and the Powys Family History
Society. Both have stalls at www.genfair.com and you can join via their
secure server using a credit card. There are links to both societies own
webpages and lists of their publications, so you'll get an idea of which
records have been transcribed, published or searchable via one of the
societies.
I live in the U.S., also (in Michigan), and use the nearest LDS (Mormon)
family history center to order the microfilms I need to research the Welsh
records. They've filmed the Bishop's Transcripts (transcripts of the
original parish registers) for most of Wales. Based on the parish of birth
of the person you're looking for, you should be able to locate baptisms,
marriages and deaths in the BT's if they occurred *prior* to July 1837, when
Civil Registration began.
For anyone researching in Wales, the one book I consider to be a "must
have" is "Welsh Family History, A Guide to Research", ed. by John & Sheila
Rowlands, 2nd edition1998, pub. by the Federation of Family History
Societies Publications Ltd. and the authors, ISBN 1 86006 065 X.
You can now purchase this book in the U.S. from Genealogical Publishing Co.,
Baltimore, MD -- website www.genealogybookshop.com

Hello Julie,
Thank you very much for your response.
I must have had two Senior Moments yesterday.
First is the fact that my 4X gr. grandfather was in fact RICHARD DAVIES (b)
ca 1800 not John.
Second was that I do NOT have them in the 1861 Census in Wigan.
In the 1871 Census in Wigan, Lanc., Eng., I do have John ca 1831 & George ca
1838, (both
bricklayers). This John is my 3X gr grandfather & I assume that George is
his brother. I will be
interested in tracking the other family members also.
The following 1851 Census seems to be the correct family.
Could you tell me where I should look for other info for this family?
Can I post a 1861 Census Look-up request to the list?
I am very new to research in Wales, so all suggestions will be appreciated.
I am also anxious to find more info. on my family, as we will be visiting
England & Wales in Sept.
2001 & hubby says limited research & more sight seeing.

ll leave that for later.
Thank you so much for the info. & quick response.

Hi List,
I am a new subscriber desperately looking for help in my search for information on my grandparents. Here is the tale.
My Grandfather was Robert Arthur Hackett BARNETT born 12 March 1877 in Leicester, the illegitimate son of Alfred HACKETT and Elizabeth BARNETT.
We never knew he was illegitimate and have never been able to get a birth certificate for him until we found this out through help received from the Leicester list, we now have his birth certificate.
He married his first cousin Maud Mary HACKETT sometime around 1897 but I have been unable to find a marriage cert despite numerous searches at PRO etc.
In an attempt to trace this marriage I have just got a copy of his daughters birth certificate which shows that Sarah Elizabeth HACKETT was born 0n 8th March 1898 at what looks like GRS Cottages, Llanllwchaiarn, Newtown, Co. Montgomery. Parents Robert Arthur HACKETT a Butchers Manager and Maud Mary HACKETT formerly HACKETT.
Has anyone got access to records that they could look up to see if Robert and Maude were married in Wales? or to see if there other children were born in Llanllwchaiarn, there names were Albert, Alfred and George.
In the 1891 census Robert is still living with his parents in Leicester, and by 1923 he was back in Leicester as Maud Mary died then and is buried in Leicester.
Now the next complication.
On 12 August 1925 Robert married my Grandmother Beatrice Maud Gwenllian GRIFFITHSs at Leicester registry office, and had 4 more children by her, Robert, Barre ( My Father ) Dorothy and Marilyn, all born in Leicester.
Beatrice was born on 25 November 1895 at 85 Station Street, Cadoxton, S. Wales the daughter of William GRIFFITHS and Mary Ann LEWIS.
At the time of the marriage both were shown as widower and widow, my Grandmother had previously married ????? CARTWRIGHT presumably in Wales and had children by him who I believe were adopted into other families but I understand that a photo of one of these children bears an uncanny resemblance to my cousin ( another of Roberts grandchildren).
I am wondering why a Leicester born and bred lad with no Welsh connections that I know of ended up in Llanllwchaiarn???
Why a Welsh born lass ended up in Leicester leaving behind her children or having them adopted??
Who was my Grandmothers first husband this unknown CARTWRIGHT and how did she meet my Grandfather, is Llanllchaiarn close to Cadoxton??, I still have relatives who descend from William GRIFFITHS and Mary Ann LEWIS living in Barry Island but none that can shed any light on the matter.
Apologies for the length of this first posting but finding out about this Grandfather of mine has been occupying so much time for so long I am hoping someone can help.
His exploits in Leicester after marrying my Grandmother make another story.
Thank You for reading this and any help would be most appreciated.

Hi,
My 3x great-grandfather is listed on the Liverpool 1861 Census as being born in 'Montomeryshire nk'. Has anyone got any ideas as to what the 'nk' part means?
Thanks in advance,

I have just joined this list in my search for my gt grandfather's family. He
was John EVANS son of David and Mary EVANS of Penrorin, Trefeglwys. He is
probably the John Evans christened 2 Oct 1853 at Trefeglwys and had a sister
Mary christened 21 Sep 1851.
John is said to have been young when he left home after his mother's death
and father's remarriage. However he didn't leave for Australia until later -
we have a book (Traethodau, Dr Edwards) presented to John EVANS by the New
Jewin Young Men's Christian Society March 15th 1879 on the occasion of his
departure for Australia which would make him about 25.
We were fortunate that there was later contact with descendants of Richard
and Evan EVANS the sons of David Evans second marriage. Perhaps someone of
that family is on this list.
With the similarity of names probably difficult to track John EVANS years
between Penrorin and going to Australia.
Would also like to hear from anyone interested in Penrorin, Trefeglwys and
Evans.
Thank you
