The listing of households in the enumeration sheets of 1841 Census (Township of Cyffty,
Parish of Llanycil ) is confusing in that it suggests several locations with the place
name that includes “LLwyn” and “Llwyn mawr.”
The first listing in the sequence:
LlwynMawr Ucha:
John Williams, 25, Farmer
Elizabeth 4?
David, 15
Elizabeth 12
Elinor 20
Catherine 8
Rowland Edwards 25 MS (manservant)
LlwynMawr Issa
Sylvanus Hughes 25
Second listing (separate page):
LLwynmawr
Thomas Cadwaladr 50 Ag Lab
Llwyn Hir
William Humphreys 25 Blacksmith
Third Listing (separate page)
LLwynmawr D. Williams 82. Ind
Do. Thomas Reese 68 Farmer
Llwyn Hir
Hugh Hughes, 52 Ag. lab.
I checked the locations of these places on the 6 inch map, 1888- 1913, (National Library
of Scotland).
LlwynMawr Ucha and LlwynMawr Issa are adjacent to each another, each with a small cluster
of buildings around a main building
Llwyn Hhir is separate, and further to the north.
This is the listing for LlwynMawr Ucha in the 1851 census:
1851 Census.
Merionethshire, Cyffty Distrcit 3c
HO107/2510
Llwynmawr Ucha
John Willams 60 Farmer of 160 acres Born Llanycil
Elizabeth Williams wife 58 (Llanycil)
David Williams 28 Farmers son employed on the farm( Llanycil)
Elizabeth Williams Dtr 23 employed at farm. (Llanycil)
Catherine Williams Dtr 19 Employed at farm (Llanycil)
Humphrey Evans serv
Robert Roberts 24 Serv
Griffith Roberts 18
Mary Jones 15
As a matter of curiosity:
LlwynMawr Isa
1) Hugh Owens, 57. Ag lab
2) Thomas Reese (80) and family. Farmer of 35 acres
I will not speculate about the distribution of the Williams households in the 1841 census.
It is clear, however, that by 1851 Llwynmawr Ucha was a substantial family operated farm
with 4 live in servants.

I have been getting into Findmypast. Although the indexing is odd, it has provided a
useful insight into records hundreds of miles away.
So I have gone back one generation:
John Williams appears in the 1841 census for Llwynmawr with David Williams aged 80.
John son of David Williams and Elinor bapt Llanycil 1789.
David son of William Cadwalader and Jane Philip (marr 1760 in Llanycil) bapt 1765.
Jane Philip bur 1781 of Blaen y Cwm.
To cut a long story short (I started down this route in 2006!) Blaen y Cwm and Llwynmawr
seem strongly linked BUT there is a morass of Cadwaladers and Williams!
So this is a work in progress which will involve PR and wills.
