Hello all,
Many thanks to Jeff, Eryl, Tony, Alwyn, Doreen and everyone else who helped
us locate Ty'n y Gottel, our WIDDY location in the 1841 Census. In our
continuing search for said elusive WIDDYs we have looked at the film for
baptisms at Cynwyd Calvinist Methodists Connection. Must have been a small
community, there are children of the same family born two years apart with
only one or two entries in between! Our Richard's entry (alas, the only
WIDDY) reads as follows:
No: 27
Child's Name: Richard
The Name of Father and Mother: Michael & Gwen Widdy
Former Name of the Mother, Whether Spinster or Widow: Gwen Jones, Widow
Father's Business or Profession: Labourer
Parents' Residence: Cynwyd
Father's Parish: Foreigner
Mother's Parish Before her Marriage: Gwyddelwern
Where Child Born: January 1st 1835
In What Parish Born: Gwyddelwern
When Baptised: January 11th 1835
Where Baptised: Cynwyd Chapel
By whom Baptised: Rev Richd. Jones
Remarks: Bala
The question is: How foreign is a foreigner in Wales in 1835? Is he truly
foreign, from another continent (such as Europe), foreign from elsewhere in
the UK, as in an Englishman or Irishman, or could it just mean anyone not
from the county of Merionethshire? All other entries on the page are
parishes in Merioneth. We have no idea where Michael originally came from.
Another question: Does the "Bala" in the Remarks column indicate where the
Rev Richd Jones was from, or does it have some other meaning?
Other baptisms on this page (if anyone would like further details, dates are
between 1825-1835) are:
