Well Trevor bach, this looks like what my grandmother would have called a
complete 'cawdel' that we may never be able to sort out. However, your info
in the previous email did line up very precisely with several of the
children in what I believe to be my EVANS family from the 1841 census at
least so has added to knowledge of them.
I would be very pleased to see a photo of Cadwst fechan (off line).
I will get in touch with Edward separately, too.

Dear David,
You're quite right - there *are* two Cadwst's now, and there has been
for "some time". The trick is to know how long "some time" is.
My 'lot', beginning with John JONES (1819-1902) *definitely* farmed
Cadwst Bach/Fach (variously so-called), and JJ married into that tenancy
by marrying Mary, dau. of David & Elizabeth DAVIES, in 1844. It was
Elizabeth who gave the first deposition in my previous message.
So, thanks to your information, it appears that there were two Cadwst's
as far back as 1841, and v. probably back to 1830.

lives in North Wales, there's this, which may relate to *your* Cadwst

Hello Trevor,
My relations were at Cadwst Vechan when two baptisms took place,
otherwise they were just described as of Cadwst and it is an area I
don't know, although I do know Bala fairly well.
David Evans' and Modlen's children were Jane born 1745, Robert 1751,
Sydney 1753, Elizabeth 1755, Ales 1757, Susanna 1759, and David 1761.
Two David Evans are listed as dying at Cadwst, 1767 & 1780: I don't know
which is the father and which is the son. They evidently used both
Davies and Evans surnames.
I hope you can sort something out from this.
Best wishes,
Edward.

However, muddying proceeds apace as 'Vechan' equates to 'Bach/Fach';
both meaning 'lesser' or 'small', whereas your line ought, logically, to
have lived at Cadwst Fawr/Mawr (='big'/'great'). The fact that this
family used EVANS (yours) & DAVIES (mine) doesn't help, either.
Mention is made of a mill in Eliz. DAVIES's statement. I recall that the
stream that ran down the hill alongside Cadwst Bach had been diverted to
run through the dairy (along a stone trough), as an early form of milk
cooler. Nevertheless, as I remember it, there just wasn't the power in
the flow to turn a mill wheel. So that doesn't help either - sorry to
have mentioned it at all!
I am sure that there was only one Cadwst *area* in
Llandrillo(-yn-Edeirnion), MER; I'm pretty sure that at one time there
was but one farm there of that name (and maybe only one property, too).
The presence of a mill should make the property quite significant (extra
income for both tenant & landowner). I also feel in my water that there
are connections between all three family lines, but just who & when (&
where & why) I don't know.
I can send you modern pictures of Cadwst Bach if you wish - offlist, of
course.
Hope this helps (or not, as the case may be <G>),
Trevor
