Subject: Re: [MER] Ships from Ports in Merioneth
Hi Tricia,
'Maglona' is an ancient name that had some usage around Machynlleth.
I've no idea how, but Machynlleth had an old tradition in shipping.
In the 1890s I would guess shipping slate from the quarries to the cities.
Perhaps someone at Machynlleth library could help you?

Subject: [MER] Ships from Ports in Merioneth

Hi everyone,
Can anyone tell me please whether there is an index anywhere of ships and/or
seamen who would have sailed from Merioneth ports in the 19th century. I am
particularly interested in a William JONES born 1858 in Dolgelly who I
think is
the same person who appears on the 1881 census as an able seaman aboard the
Maglona in port at Devonport who may also be a ships officer who died in
1892.
On the 1881 census his place of birth is given as Aberdovey like the rest of
the crew and I know that William JONES is a common name, but everything fits
my William Jones except the place of birth. Would anyone know if there was a
regular trade between the Merioneth area and Devonport or anything about this
particular ship please?
Many thanks,
Tricia Heseltine
