I'm planning a trip to Wales in March. Where would I look for
the
marriage record?
You could pay a visit to Dylan Jones, Superintendent Registrar, Meirionnydd
Area Office, Cae Penarlag, Dolgellau LL40 2YB phone: 01341 424341 (It's best
to phone to make an apointment first)
Dylan is an extremely helpful man who is always ready to aid family
historians. However because marriages are registered in churches and chapels
all over a district rather than centrally in the registrar's office, as is
the case with births and deaths, finding marriages can cause difficulties for
the busy registrar.
Before coming to Wales you could see if you can find a local reference
library or LDS centre which has the GRO marriage index (sometimes called the
St Catherine's index) on fiche (most LDS centres throughout the world either
have a copy or can get hold of one).
The GRO marriage index comes in quarters, and records the names of all who
married within that quarter in alphabetical order and gives the name of the
registration district in which they married, looking something like this:
Jones, William Cardiff 11a 371
Jones, William Rugby 6d 475
Jones, William A. Manchester 8d 405
Starting from the quarter in which the first child was born and working
backwards look for the name of the partner with the least common name (Rees
Price, in your case, is less common than Mary Hughes). Every time you find an
entry for that name make a note of the registration district and the
reference number and then look up the spouses name to see if you can find one
with a matching district and reference number (marriage partners Always have
matching numbers - however a matching number is not a guarantee that they
were married)
If you provide the registrar with the quarters in which you found matches, it
might make it easier for him to find the right certificate.
all the best
Alwyn
