Watkins is a VERY uncommon name in Merioneth, indeed there appear to be only three Watkins
families having children in the late 1870 early 1880s in the county according to the 1891
census:
RG12/4642 Folio 64 Sch 25 Minffordd Dolgellau
William Watkins Head Married M 27 Gardener & Coachman Abererch CAE Welsh
Kate Watkins Wife Married F 30 Llanwnda CAE Welsh
Willie Watkins Son M 4 Dolgellau MER Welsh
Johny Watkins Son M 2 Dolgellau MER
RG12/4642 Folio 64 Sch 21 Tanybryn Dolgellau
Thomas Bevan Watkins Head Married M 50 Railway Servant Eardsley HEF Both
Ann Watkins Wife Married F 50 [gwag / blank] Both
Annie Watkins Daughter Single F 15 Dressmaker's Apprentice Dolgellau MER Both
Cecilia Watkins Daughter F 14 Dolgellau MER Both
Diana Watkins Daughter F 12 Dolgellau MER Both
RG12/4640 Rhiwlas Lodge Llanfor
John Watkins Head 39 Joiner Llanfor MER
Gwen Watkins Wife 35 LLanycil MER
Jane Watkins Daughter 11 Llanfor MER
Kate Watkins Daughter 9 Llanfor MER
Maggie Watkins Daughter 6 Llanfor MER
This last family appear to have at least two children who were not at home on census night
as there are also a Rachel Watkins aged 10 as a visitor in Sarnau and a Leah Watkins aged
11 working as a servant in Llanfor, both of whom were also born in Llanfor..
It is possible that one of the girls mentioned above might have had Gwen / Winifred (Welsh
and English versions of the same name) as a second name which is not noted in the census.
You have details of the year of your Winifred's marriage, have you tried finding a
marriage certificate for her? If you can get hold of one it should give you her
father's name which would show which, if any, of the above families she belonged to
