Hello Alwyn,
I followed your advice & asked the registrar. The deaths
were described in the following way:
Dates: between 23 Oct 1917 & 14 January 1918
Deceased: Unknown (males), probably sailors
Cause of death: Found dead [on the beach, Parish of Llangelynin] having been
washed ashore from the sea. No evidence to prove Cause of Death, or how
[they] got into the water
Informant: Inquest. Dylan added that as it was wartime, these were not
uncommon occurrences.
Graham.

As they were unknown, my guess would be bodies washed up on the beach
after
some sort of shipping accident. (Any other sort of disaster, such as
a
mine
collapse, would not have left the deceased "unknown" even
if their bodies
were
unidentifiable) Why don't you ask the registrar Dylan N Jones to
have a
look at
the registers to see what the cause was? He can be contacted on the
following
e-mail address:
dylannjones(a)gwynedd.gov.uk
And remember to let us know what you discover.
all the best
Alwyn
