Message Board Post:
Neither Mary nor Joseph would have been born early enough to have had their births
registered through the civil registration process, so your only chance of finding an
approximation of their birth dates will be if they were christened as children. As many
Merionethshire families had become nonconformists by the 1830's this might prove
difficult.
The next steps you need to take are:
From the census return, you know that Joseph and Mary had moved to
Liverpool before 1862, because their eldest son Thomas is recorded as having been born
there.
Your next step should be to try and trace Joseph and Mary in the 1871 and 1861 Census
returns for Liverpool. You may find that users of the Liverpool and South Lancashire Board
may be able to help with this task
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.bri...
From these census returns you should be able to find out if Joseph and
Mary had any other children born before Thomas. As people tended to have children fairly
early after marriage in the 1860's, they probably got married within a year or so
EITHER side of the birth of the eldest child. You should then try to obtain a marriage
certificate for them.
They may have been married in either Liverpool or in south Merionethshire. The registrar
for south Merionethshire has a database of all marriage that took place in his area so an
e-mail to him should find the marriage easily if it was there. His address is:
dylannjones(a)gwynedd.gov.uk
If the marriage took place in Liverpool then you will need to search the GRO index of
marriages for the most likely years. This is available on-line for a fee at
http://www.1837online.com/
or it may be consulted on microfiche at most large libraries in the UK and in LDS centres
worldwide, having found the details in the index you will have to order a copy of the
marriage certificate.
The marriage certificate will give you the names of the bride and groom's fathers
(unless they were illegitimate) the father's names will be of help in finding Joseph
and Mary in earlier census returns as children in Merionethshire and will also help to
find baptismal records for them, if they exist.
Once you have the details from the marriage certificate send the details on to the board
and we can let you know how to proceed from there
