Dolgellau and Dolgelley are the same place. Although, as you point out
Dolgellau is only a small place on the map it is the main county town for
the County of Merionethshire.
The copy certificate that you had would be in English and Welsh, however
certificates originally published in 1947 would only have been in English,
so the filled in details on the certificate should only be in English. Today
one can expect the filled in details to be in both languages.
U.D. is Urban District. One can also find R. D. for Rural District on
certificates from the same period. They refer to the "designation" of the
local government unit for the area. Urban Districts had a bit more
responsibility for public health than rural districts.
It is interesting that your grandmother was noted as dying in Llwyn View in
1947. Llwyn View was the Workhouse for Dolgellau, it later became a hospital
for people with learning difficulties; now it is a complex of luxury
apartments!
In 1947 the workhouse system was coming to an end, so your grandmother would
have been one of the last to have entered into the system, but as the place
of death is noted by the building's name rather than as Dolgelley Union
Workhouse it would appear that she was being cared for in her last days,
under the post war welfare reforms, rather than suffering the indignity of
the workhouse regime.
All the best
Alwyn

Subject: [MER] Llwyn View, Dolgelley
Hi, just new to this list.
My great grandmother, Ellen Brockwell, was moved from London to Wales,
during the war, for her safety. She died in 1947 at Llwyn View, Dolgelley.
U.D. as stated on the certified copy of death certificate I ordered. It
states the Reg. District as Merioneth South, Sub District Barmouth, in the
County of Merioneth.
I looked on a map I have, in a book called Pigot & Co's British Atlas, 1840.
I found a place called Dolgellau in Merionethshire. Would that be the same
place? ( Dolgelley and Dolgellau) If not, can someone please tell me where
Llwyn View, Dolgelley is located. And what does U.D. stand for?
Also, please excuse my ignorance, but the certificate is in two languages,
so the language other than English, is it Welsh?
Thanks in advance for assistance,
Sincerely, Judy Carleton
