Alwyn,
Thank you so very much for answering my request. I think you may have hit
on the reason that I had not found William's parents. When I looked at the
Bishop's Transcripts some years back I knew little about the Welsh naming
practices, so I was using the English method of a given name with a surname.
So no William Jones born on Sept. 20, 1792
appeared. The entry you found may be the correct one.
Only one thing makes me question it and that is the name of the mother,
Elinor. Her name was not used in the family at all. Was it not a common
practice to use the mother's name in naming a son's daughters? Or was this
among the English and Scots only?
Some interesting names used by William in naming his children are Halse,
Gatty, Howel, Locke. I know Howel is Welsh, but how about the others?
Again my thanks for sending me the entry. Your help is very much
appreciated.
Sarah

Subject: Re: [MER] William Jones born Dolgellau 1792
There is a William the son of John Griffith and Elinor his wife baptised at
Dolgellau on September 23rd 1792. Although he is not a "Jones" this may be
your man.
Most children in north west Wales in the 1700's didn't use family names,
children were named by their father's given name, so Ifan the son of
Gruffydd Dafydd would be known as Ifan Gruffydd. Because the law said that
entries in Parish Registers had to be written in English, Welsh names were
often Anglicised and made to look like English given name / surname
combinations. So Ifan the son of Gruffydd Dafydd would be recorded at
baptism as Evan the son of Griffith Davies, however when he married he would
be recorded as Evan Griffiths.
Because Jones means the son of John, it is a strong posibility that William
the son of John Griffith might have been known as William Jones
All the best

Hello,
After 20 years of research I am still looking for the parents of William
Jones,
born 20 September 1792 in Dolgellau. I have looked at the LDS
Bishops' Transcripts with no results. Is there someone living in or near
Dolgellau who would be able to search the church entries in the
Dolgellau
Archives for a record of his birth? I do not know in which church he
would
have been baptized. I know that he lived at Glandwr Hall between Dolgellau
and Barmouth and that he is buried at St. Mary's Churchyard in Llanaber,
but I do not know where his parents lived when he was born. All censuses
say he was born in Dolgellau. He evidently was Anglican.
Any help will be very much appreciated.
